Blueberry benefits and harms

Blueberry (Vaccinium myrtillus) is a perennial undersized shrub of the heather family. It grows mainly in northern latitudes, in coniferous forests. Bilberry loves sandy soil and pine forest, but is sometimes found near swampy areas. The most valuable are the fruits of blueberries – small round purple berries with a dark juice that leaves bright traces. This also explains the enthymology of the name of useful berries.

Composition and useful properties of blueberries

Blueberries contain a lot of nutrients – proteins, carbohydrates, dietary fiber, vitamins and minerals. The berry contains magnesium and potassium, free organic acids, vitamin C, vitamin PP, phosphorus, cobalt, pantothenic acid, iron salts. In terms of manganese content, blueberries are ahead of all known berries, vegetables and fruits.

The beneficial properties of blueberries can hardly be overestimated. The presence of vitamins, magnesium and tannins provide vaso-strengthening, antibacterial, antianemic action. Blueberries are recommended for the prevention of atherosclerosis. The iron contained in berries is much better absorbed by the body than in traditional preparations. 

But the main use of blueberries is in the treatment of many eye diseases. Bilberry extract is included in many medicines for the treatment of eye diseases, dietary supplements for the prevention of visual impairment.

Fresh berry juice is drunk in pure or diluted form; it has a good diuretic and cleansing effect. It helps well in the presence of sand in the kidneys, relieves inflammation and is used for intestinal infections.

The phytoncides contained in blueberries kill E. coli, help against Staphylococcus aureus. A decoction of dry or fresh berries gargle with tonsillitis, tonsillitis and stomatitis. Blueberry tea and herbal teas with the addition of berries are good for treating various digestive disorders. Regular consumption of blueberries lowers blood sugar levels and regulates insulin production.

Despite the sugar content and sweet taste, the berry is a unique dietary product. Blueberries contain few calories, and in terms of fiber and dietary fiber, they are equated to rye bread. The presence of many vitamins and minerals has a positive effect on metabolism and prevents avitominosis. Blueberries are an excellent addition to any dietary diet.
