Cornflower benefit and harm

The chemical composition of meadow cornflower contains a lot of ascorbic acid and carotene, pectin, coumarin, resinous substances. But there are also trace elements that endow the cornflower with harmful properties. A particular danger is posed by active compounds with a cyanic component, because of which this plant is considered weakly poisonous.

Cornflower seeds are high in fatty oils.

Application in medicine

The medical use of cornflower is very wide: it is used as an antimicrobial, disinfectant, diuretic and diaphoretic, as well as a wound healing agent. Cornflowers, whose beneficial properties are used to improve the condition of the skin, treat complex skin diseases – furunculosis, eczema, lichen, and so on. The healing properties of cornflower are very actively used in cosmetology, for the manufacture of various lotions, creams and tonics.

How else is cornflower useful for health? The flowers of the medicinal plant find their application in many diuretic, diaphoretic and gastric preparations, and are used together with the boyars nickname, valerian, mistletoe or yarrow.

Contraindications and harm of cornflower

Due to the pronounced toxicity, the use of cornflower-based preparations inside is categorically contraindicated for pregnant and lactating women, as well as children.

Because of its toxic properties, cornflower is not used in cooking, but cornflower flowers are excellent honey plants. Cornflower honey is transparent, bitter and has a light amber-greenish tint.
