São Paulo — The National Electric System Operator (ONS) this Friday reduced its expectation of rainfall in January for the hydroelectric dam areas in Southeast Brazil, which already indicated rainfall below the historical average for the period.

According to a weekly report, the ONS now sees rains in the Southeast, which concentrates the largest hydroelectric reservoirs, at 70% of the historical average, compared to 75% in the previous forecast.

The ONS also reduced the expectation of rains in the hydroelectric plants of the South in January, to 46% of the historical average, compared to 64% in the previous forecast.

On the other hand, the ONS raised the estimate of rainfall at hydroelectric plants in the Northeast in January to 43% of the historical average, compared to 29% in the previous forecast.

The system operator now forecasts a 0,8% drop in energy load on Brazil’s interconnected system in January, compared with a forecast of a 1,1% drop in the previous week’s report.

The sum of consumption and losses in the network, the load should fall more sharply in the Southeast (-2,7%), while in the South the estimate is for a fall of 0,8%.
