Technology dominates in third wave of innovations to improve agricultural production

At a time marked by the dynamism of scientific and technological advances in all segments, researchers say that agriculture is entering what is called the third wave of innovations, precisely the one that will use even more technology to improve agricultural productivity.

According to Embrapa researcher Silvia Massruhá, in an interview with Portal Datagro, the first wave was the green revolution, in fertilizers, seeds and pesticides; the second, which is ongoing, is guided by integrated production systems, such as, for example, the integration-crop-livestock-forest (ILPF).

The researcher says that the third wave will be marked by the use of biological inputs, digital solutions, the Internet of Things (Iot), automation, gene editing, nanotechnology, among other innovations.

“They will be increasingly complex technologies and systems, with a focus on doing more with less in a sustainable way.”

“We will have connected farms, with agriculture based on digital solutions for monitoring and controlling pests, inputs, climate, soil, among other variables. With the adoption of the most diverse sensors, the mass of data that will be generated will be fundamental to help the producer improve his performance”, Sylvia highlights.

Silvia also emphasizes that the “empowerment” of the consumer will be a determining factor for the demand for technologies in the agricultural production chain.

“Consumers want to know about the origin and traceability of food, for example, and the technology used in production needs to be explained to them.”

Among the challenges, according to the researcher, are poor connectivity in the field, the need to train the workforce, the search for integration between technologies, etc.

Faced with this scenario, we see great challenges and opportunities not only in the agricultural production sector, but in the IT sector, after all these technologies need to talk (integration) and with the collection of a large number of information (big data) software will be needed to receive these data, organize and generate accurate reports.
