How to plant onion sets at home?

Who doesn’t want to have year-round greenery at home? There is nothing difficult in growing onion sets at home. From the article you will learn how to do it in various ways: in sawdust, an egg container, a box, and just a regular plastic bag.

We will also talk about suitable varieties, general planting conditions, ways to combat diseases and pests, as well as other rules for caring for such plants. Don’t be afraid to experiment and have fresh herbs on the table all the time! Onion sets are a storehouse of vitamins.

You can grow onion sets at home at no special cost, the main thing is to follow the agrotechnical rules and acquire high-quality planting material. Not every variety is suitable for growing on a windowsill or balcony.

For the best harvest per feather, only multi-germ varieties are suitable:

• bessonovsky;
• Rostov;
• Arzamas;
• spassky and others.

To make sure that the onion is multi-grained, cut the onion in half – you will see hearts in the section. From each such heart, several rudiments for feathers will develop. In order to get a turnip, the following varieties are suitable:

• “Strigunovsky” (with sharp fruits for any culinary purposes);
• “Siberian annual” (with a pleasant bittersweet taste);
• Red Baron (with juicy fruits suitable for conservation);
• “Danilovsky 301” (with a semi-sharp sweetish taste);
• “Shaman” and others (with a sharp spicy taste).

Seeds can be harvested by yourself: the easiest way is to get sevok from the seeds of the uterine turnip bulb. Nigella – this is the name of these seeds. Collect nigella depending on the purpose for which you need onions: for greens or for turnips. Based on this, select the mother plant of the desired variety. The maximum yield is given by last year’s nigella.

Before planting onions on the balcony, take a suitable container, earth or other mixture for growing sevka. And most importantly – prepare planting material. When sowing nigella, proceed as follows.

1. Wrap the seeds into a natural fabric and lowered for 12-15 minutes in heated (not higher than +50 degrees) water. Having taken out, the nigella is arranged for 1 minute a contrast shower under cold running water.
2. Dip the seeds again in water at room temperature and leave to swell for 36 hours.
3. The water is drained the seed material is placed in a cloth bag, it is moistened and the nigella is kept in this way for 1-2 days.
4. One more day seeds kept in a container with water under oxygen pressure.
5. The seeds are then dried outdoors for a quarter of an hour and sown in a prepared container with the desired substrate.

You can do it differently: sort the seeds by size and disinfect them in a solution of potassium permanganate (1 g of manganese per 1 liter of water). Then hold the nigella in a biostimulator, for example: take 1 drop of “Epin” and dilute in 100 ml of water.

Following these rules, 10-14 days after planting, you will see the first shoots.

If you plan to grow onion sets, choose only high-quality specimens and preferably the same size. Prepare them for landing as follows.

1. Remove a few peels from above (remove the husk).
2. If the goal is to plant sevok on a feather, then cut off the top with scissors – so the greens will come out faster (if you grow on a turnip, do not cut off the top).
3. To awaken the growth points, the bulbs are also soaked for several hours in warm (up to +50 degrees) water.
4. Potassium parchment crystals can be added to this water until a solution of a rich pink-violet color is obtained. This is necessary to disinfect the seed material.
5. The bulbs are washed under running water, but do not dry.

Such seedlings are immediately planted in prepared pots. If there is no time to mess around with long preparations, then just before planting (per day), soak the bulbs in water, and half an hour before deepening, disinfect them with a weak solution of manganese.

Onion heads may not be soaked before planting, but still, if you want to get a crop faster, carry out “bathing” procedures for planting material – this way you will speed up the process of green mass appearance for at least a week.

Planting onion sets in an apartment is not difficult, the main thing is to perform all agrotechnical measures correctly. You can grow greens all year round, but you should start in the spring. The advantages of home breeding sevka is that it can be planted not only in the ground – they use various containers for this.

But still, some general landing rules are recommended to be observed:

• plant bulbs at a distance of 7-10 cm from each other;
• observe the distance between rows within 15–20 cm;
• deepen the seed material by 4–6 cm.

For nigella (seeds), the parameters are somewhat different:

• sow it in grooves 1 cm deep;
• the distance between rows should correspond to 1,5–2 cm;
• sprinkled with substrate on top, but with a layer of no more than 1 cm.

Before the seeds are deepened, you can pour a little sand into the grooves. After planting, the ground is moistened, it is advisable to cover the container with polyethylene, after making small holes in it.

At home, you can grow onion sets for greens in flower pots, egg containers, small plastic containers – all this will fit on the windowsill. But you can choose more voluminous boxes and place them already on the balcony.

It is important that such a container has drainage holes. You can make them yourself with an awl or a heated sharp knife. Holes will save the onion from rotting in the case when excess moisture is formed during watering.

The sequence of planting seedlings in containers with soil:

• the container is well washed in advance and holes are made at the bottom (if there are no factory-made holes for drainage);
• dry the container in natural conditions or wipe it with sterile gauze wipes;
• fill with earth approximately to the level of 8–10 centimeters;
• the bulbs are deepened into the earthy substrate only halfway down with the root base;
• transferred to a warm place (on a balcony or window sill, if the container fits).

For growing on a feather, the heads can be placed quite close to each other – in this case, the greens are interesting, not the turnip, so feel free to plant more onions so that they give more vitamins.

Sevok grows well in bags with pressed sawdust. Many people like this convenient and simple method due to the fact that you do not need to mess with the ground – less dirt. And sawdust at an affordable price can be freely bought at specialized garden stalls or pet stores.

Before using sawdust, you need to pour boiling water over and steam until it swells.. After they have cooled, they are placed in a bag (layer – at least 3-4 cm). Set heads are planted in a slightly damp prepared substrate, but not completely deepened.

The principle of cultivation is the same as in the case of sawdust. Only instead of them, other materials are used as a substrate. So, you can experiment with soaked napkins or toilet paper. Forest moss or onion peel itself is perfect.

Sevok on greens can be germinated in water. To do this, you need a regular plastic egg container.

• Divide the container in half. One needs to be riddled with an awl, making holes for the roots in each compartment.
• Pour water into the other part and place in a shallow container with sides.
• Place onions in cells with holes, then this whole structure is installed on a half in which water is poured, having previously separated them with wooden sticks.
• An egg container with onions is placed in a well-lit place: on the windowsill, balcony or somewhere else where there is also a lot of light.

Another original way to grow onions is to use a five-liter water bottle. The sequence of actions is as follows:

• cut off the top of the bottle and make small holes in the walls;
• fill the container with the prepared composition of the soil mixture;
• bulb heads are placed in such a way that the part with the root system is in the substrate, and the top is peeking out (so that the feather develops outward);
• for such a design, a pallet is needed so that excess liquid flows there;
• place this agricultural structure on a balcony or windowsill.

Any box is very convenient for growing onions at home. If it is with open holes, then a pallet will be needed for it. Typically, apartments use such containers with a length of 70 to 120 cm. The process of planting sevka:

• if it is a plastic box, make drainage holes in it;
• the container is washed and dried, it can be disinfected;
• pour the substrate at the level of 10–12 centimeters;
• bulbs are deepened by half (if it is on a feather and closer to each other);
• moisten the soil mixture and transfer the box to a sunny place.

Hydroponic forcing is considered by many to be the most effective way to grow green onions at home. In specialized stores, hydroponics installations are sold, from where each bulb receives ready-made food.

Caring for onions planted on a feather on a window comes down to regular watering and creating other optimal conditions. It is not difficult to grow your own green vitamins if you follow the requirements listed below.

1. Watering (with the exception of hydroponic forcing). It is important that the substrate is always wet, so water as the soil dries with settled water.
2. Loosening. Before each watering, it is desirable to loosen the topsoil.
3. Additional fertilizing. If the sevok does not break through well, use ready-made fertilizer formulations once every two weeks. If the situation is under control and the onion germination is proceeding at the right pace, then feed the onion for the first time after planting, and the second time after the appearance of the first green sprouts.

In specialized outlets, you will be offered your favorite drinks for onion sets in the form of soluble fertilizers. Well, do not forget about heat and light – these factors play an important role in the formation of the feather. Find comfortable places – so that these landings do not interfere with you.

Pests can destroy the crop and at home. All the same onion fly is dangerous both in the garden and in any place where her favorite culture grows. She lays the larvae directly into the greenery, and they can completely destroy the feather.
