Onion variety “Sturon”: growing features

Many gardeners prefer to grow Sturon onions in their beds. It is believed that this variety has increased resistance to diseases and severe frosts. It is valued for its unpretentiousness in care and ease of cultivation. But you can get a good harvest only if you follow a few important rules.

Characteristics of vegetables

Sutron is one of the best onion varieties, because after the appearance of the first sprouts, it is already possible to harvest for 100-110 days. The variety is resistant to frost, endures even the most severe frosts.

Large bulbs are formed only in the second year, in the first season you can get only good material for planting. With proper onion care, up to 35 tons of crop can be obtained from one hectare. This attracts many entrepreneurs involved in growing vegetables for sale.

A feature of the Sturon variety is the shelf life of hearths. If you fulfill all the necessary requirements, the crop will have a fresh look for 8 months. The fruits of Sturon can be characterized by the oblong shape of an ellipse. Sometimes the mass of one bulb can reach 210 grams.

Breeding process

It is easy to grow onion sets from seeds yourself. By following certain rules, you will be able to get an excellent result. Landing is carried out in late March-early April after the soil is ready, so that it thaws by 5-6 centimeters.

It is recommended to prepare the soil in the fall. For 1 square meter of land, the following fertilizers are applied for digging:

  • 20 g superphosphate;
  • half a bucket of compost;
  • 20 g of phosphate fertilizers;
  • 200 g wood ash.

A few days before planting, the soil is plowed and beds are formed, after which they are compacted and covered with a black film. Seeds are important to prepare in advance. To do this, soak them in aloe juice or potassium permanganate for 4-6 hours, wrap in a damp cloth and store in a dark place for 48 hours. The fabric must not be dry.

Instructions for sowing seeds in the beds:

  1. Water the beds with warm water and make furrows at a distance of 20 cm from each other.
  2. Spread the seeds on the surface so that there is a distance of 10 cm between them.
  3. Sprinkle the seeds with a thin layer of soil and water thoroughly. Mulch plantings with compost or peat.

Planting a vegetable

You can get a big harvest only if you choose the right planting material. You can buy onion sets in the store or grow from seeds on your own. It should have large dimensions of at least 2 cm and a flat surface. It is strictly forbidden to plant sevka with such defects:

  • green arrows or small roots;
  • signs of decay;
  • signs of pest or disease exposure;
  • various mechanical damage;
  • lots of moisture on the bulbs.

Landing onions

Plant vegetables in early spring. Landing rules:

  1. Grow a vegetable on sandy or slightly acidic soils.
  2. At the end of November, humus and rotted manure are introduced into the soil for digging, and mineral fertilizers are added just before planting.
  3. Carefully cut off the neck of the bulbs so as not to damage the sprouts.
  4. Two days before planting, remove weeds, loosen the soil and dig trenches at a distance of 20 cm from each other.
  5. Deepen the sowing into the ground by 2-3,5 cm. Each bulb is located at a distance of 10-15 cm from each other.

Care

Sturon onion care is divided into several components, since the cultivation of sets and full-fledged fruits differ significantly from each other.

If the goal of the gardener is to grow fruits for human consumption, the following rules should be followed:

  1. Water the onions generously. The soil must not dry out. For one procedure per 1 square meter, it is necessary to spend up to 15 liters of water.
  2. After the first young feathers appear, fertilize the plantings using nitrogen fertilizers, for example, urea.
  3. Regularly engage in loosening the earth and cleaning it from weeds.

In the first year of plant life, when a gardener needs to get high-quality sets, you need to take care of onions like this:

  1. After the appearance of the first sprouts, planting is done less frequently. This contributes to the formation of a large set.
  2. Do not neglect the process of loosening the earth.
  3. Water the onions once a week, while adding mineral or organic fertilizers to the water.
  4. After the height of the sprouts reaches two centimeters, stop all work.

Next, the gardener must wait until the greens begin to fade completely, and the neck is softened. In this case, it will be possible to dig up the onion, dry it and prepare for storage.

When harvesting, it is strictly forbidden to wait until the leaves are completely dry, as this threatens that the vegetables may begin to rot.

Diseases and pests

Despite the fact that the onion has an increased resistance to various diseases, it can be subject to such diseases:

  • Mosaic. This is a viral disease. When infected, yellow spots appear on the leaves. Then there is a gradual death of the aerial part, and the fruits become very small, their shelf life is significantly reduced. It is almost impossible to fight this disease.
  • Cervical decay. A disease that can manifest itself during the storage of a vegetable. You can fight the problem if you get rid of the affected bulbs in a timely manner.
  • Downy mildew. This disease is manifested by characteristic spots on the leaves. Gradually, the spots begin to grow. This leads to the fact that the fungus settles in the bulbs, because of which the entire crop may die.

Such a disease spreads over a short period of time, therefore it is recommended to immediately get rid of infected plants. Treat the remaining crop with special preparations – Fitoplus and Fitosporin-M. It is difficult to get rid of such a disease. It is very important to carry out preventive treatments in a timely manner, pre-processing the material for planting.

Often onions suffer from nematodes. You can fight worms with the help of effective drugs Phosphamide and Mercaptophos.

Advantages and disadvantages of the variety

Sturon onions, like any other vegetable, can have their positive and negative sides. They are important to take into account before landing.

Grade Advantages:

  • excellent weight;
  • unique taste, aroma;
  • maintaining freshness for a long time;
  • can be grown in temperate and northern latitudes;
  • harvest is very large.

Negative sides of the bow Sturon:

  • To get a rich harvest, you need to grow the plant exclusively on sandy or loamy soils.
  • The variety has reduced immunity against downy mildew and onion mosaic.
  • When growing sevka from seeds, it is impossible to predict whether the planting material will have normal sizes.

Only with the right approach and compliance with all the requirements for planting and care, it is possible to grow a vegetable that will not only have a marketable appearance, but also have a good taste. Before you start growing a variety, it is important to evaluate your capabilities so that your efforts are not in vain.
