How much does an onion weigh?

Bulbs differ from each other not only in variety, but also in size. This figure depends on many factors. The size of the bulbs directly affects their number per kilogram. Knowing the weight of the onion is necessary for cooking, as well as for those who are on a diet.

Weight of one bulb and bunch

The larger the bulb, the more it will weigh: this is a well-known fact. In order to determine the indicators, it is recommended to weigh a medium-sized bulb. The size of one unpeeled medium-sized bulb is 135-140 grams. But due to the fact that the vegetable will be eaten in a purified state, it is recommended to use the weight indicators of just such an onion.

To get the most accurate weight, you must do the following:

  1. using a knife, first cut off the root part, and then the one where the feather was located;
  2. remove the skin, not forgetting the thin film that is under it;
  3. wash the vegetable under running water and dry well with a paper towel.

In this state, the onion head is completely ready for weighing. A kitchen scale works best for this purpose. On them, the readings will be the most accurate. If you put a vegetable on the scales, you can see that 1 pc. onion weighs 110-115 g.

Those who control nutrition need to know not only the weight of the average head, but also the calorie data. 1 piece of onion weighing 100 g contains:

  • proteins – 1,5 g;
  • fat – 0,3 g;
  • carbohydrates – 9 g.

One medium-sized bulb contains about 46 kcal.

If we talk about feather bows, then everything here also depends on the volume of the beam itself. The onion that is sold in supermarkets weighs about 50-70 grams. There is another important feature: the bow is divided into winter and summer. It is noteworthy that feather onions grown in winter weigh much less.

Green onions grown in summer can weigh about 100 g in a bunch. The so-called winter onion is much lighter: it weighs about 40-50 g. It is noteworthy that green onions are less high-calorie than onions. A bundle weighing 100 g contains only 19 kcal.

Of them:

  • proteins – 1,3 g;
  • fats – 0 g;
  • carbohydrates – 4,6

Based on these data, the following conclusion can be drawn: for those who are on a diet, it is best to eat green rather than onions.

How many onions are in 1 kilogram?

In one kilogram of onions, as a rule, there are from 7 to 9 medium-sized onions. If the heads are smaller, then there will be more of them. If we take into account large bulbs, then here there are only 3-4 pieces per kilogram.

Onions that are intended for planting are called seed onions or simply sets. It differs from the usual onion in size. Thus, the weight of one seed bulb is from 1 to 3 g. Based on these data, we can conclude that 1 kg contains from 400 to 600 of these bulbs. But these figures are averages, since the number of heads also depends on their size.

Bulb of the largest size

There is a record for the weight of the world’s largest bulb, which was set in 1997. Then Mel Andy from the UK grew a bulb weighing just over 7 kg.

The largest bulbs are observed in the Stuttgarter Riesen variety. The weight of large bulbs is 250 g. The following varieties are also quite large: Exhibition, Bessonovsky Local, Rostovsky, Timiryazevsky, Danilovsky, Krasnodarsky and some others.

When determining the weight of an onion, its density must also be taken into account. The fact is that one vegetable can be large in diameter, but at the same time more loose. Sometimes a vegetable of small diameter, but it will be no less in weight due to the high density of the inner layers to each other.
