Breed of chickens – Araucan

One of the most exotic chickens in the world is the Araucan breed. It belongs to the group of decorative birds of the egg direction of productivity. Her homeland is South America. The breed got its name in honor of one of the tribe of Indians. The most important distinguishing feature of Araucan laying hens is the laying of blue eggs. The plumage color of feathered pets can be: black, white, golden, wheaten and black and red.

Another feature of the birds of this breed is the presence of a beard and tufts of feathers growing from the auricles or beard and sideburns. English and American breds, unlike German chickens, have a tail. The latter do not have them due to the absence of the coccyx.

Araucans have four toes on their feet. These birds are very calm. In the second half of the 20th century, American breeders created a dwarf breed that gained immense popularity among poultry enthusiasts interested in exotic poultry.

The annual egg production of Araucan laying hens is about 170 eggs, the average weight of which is about 50 grams. Shell color is blue. The weight of adult birds reaches two kilograms in hens and roosters gain up to two and a half kilograms of live weight.

The bird of this breed is characterized by rapid growth and precocity. Feathered pets are not adapted to incubation. In a short period of time, they adapt to any climatic conditions in which they live. These chickens are hardy, with a strong physique.

Araucans have a narrow, small head, on which a pod- or pea-shaped scallop is located. Eye color is orange-red. The beak is medium in size, slightly curved. Earrings and earlobes are bright red, small. The neck and wings are of medium length, the wings are quite close to the body. The plumage is lush, dense. The chest and back are wide, the body, like the back, is short. The legs have an unusual color – blue-green, they are not feathered, medium in size. These birds do not have a tail.
