Chickens: Chicken disease “Candidiasis goiter”

Often, owners of a small number of chickens are faced with the problems of the appearance and development of a disease in laying hens called goiter candidiasis. It is also called inflammation or thrush of the goiter. It is an extension of the chicken esophagus. In it, the primary splitting of the bird’s feed occurs, and then the food enters the stomach, where it is finally digested. The goiter is located under the throat of the laying hen. You can even feel it after a hearty “lunch” of chicken.

The occurrence of candidiasis most often occurs if the goiter in a bird has not been emptied overnight. The food in it begins to rot, dysbacteriosis develops. Experts cannot explain the cause of such a disease. Not all chickens are subject to inflammation of the goiter.

There is no vaccine for goiter candidiasis. Therefore, if you do not notice its appearance in time and do not start timely treatment, death will soon await the chicken. However, you should not worry about other birds, since this disease is absolutely not contagious. It is not transmitted to other individuals, much less to humans. Candida fungus is found in animals and humans, but its amount in the body is regulated by the microflora. The growth of the fungus can occur when a healthy microflora is disturbed.

Recognizing thrush is not difficult. With the development of this disease, chickens stop drinking and eating, almost completely lose interest in food, stop rushing and find a secluded corner for themselves, where they quietly spend time alone. Laying hens who are sick with goiter thrush try to constantly stay away from their neighbors in the nursery. They have a sour-milky smell from their beak. And when probing, it seems that a balloon filled with water is stuck in the goiter.

Death from inflammation of the goiter occurs due to the fact that the chicken stops eating, becomes exhausted, weakens, her body is dehydrated. However, it is not easy to notice that the laying hen has significantly lost weight, since she has a rather lush, beautiful plumage. When the owners of their feathered pets notice that one of them behaves differently from the rest: he eats little and does not nibble grass, precious time is lost, and it is often too late to do anything. The chicken dies after a while, even probiotics and antibiotics are powerless here.
