Rum varieties: a pirate tradition today good and bad

There are also other types of rum. For example, sometimes it is divided by fortress. At the same time, a weak – up to 30% – is called an elixir, a strong – more than 40% (sometimes up to 75%) is called strong, and a premium rum is called a variety that requires at least five years of aging.

By the way, about the endurance. Some types of rum are distinguished by the aging period. Moreover, in some producing countries, standards have been established, only with strict adherence to which rum can bear this proud name.

For example, in Mexico, producers are required to mature the rum for at least eight months, and in Cuba – 7 years – for dark, 3 years – for golden, and generally it is allowed to sell a light variety without aging. At the same time, the same Colombia and Venezuela do not at all limit manufacturers in terms of aging. The main thing there is that the fortress is observed. So, Colombian rum is considered the strongest, since drinks weaker than 50% are not considered rum here.

It is important, however, that the conditions in the tropics themselves contribute to a faster ripening of rum than the conditions of the temperate climate – for other regions. Therefore, rum can be more mature in a year than cognac in three.

And finally. Rum is not only a strong alcoholic drink with the aroma of pirate romance. Not only are its different varieties used in the preparation of various liqueurs and cocktails, they are sometimes diluted with rakh types of juices, getting delicious punch. Fruits are often soaked in it for a variety of desserts, and the famous Cuban sweets and cakes are also stuffed with it. So rum is a very popular culinary product.
