Kupen is a plant from the Liliaceae family. In nature, there are about 50 types of kupena. This plant is very widespread in Asia and Europe. It has a very developed rhizome and inclined stems, which can reach a height of up to 1.5 m, depending on which species the plant belongs to. The leaves are lanceolate and arranged in such a way that they seem to be sitting on a stem. From the axils of the leaves, we can observe how small graceful tubular flowers are located on very short legs. Kupena blooms usually in cream, pinkish and white tones. After flowering, fruits appear on the plant in the form of berries. These berries should not be eaten.
Flower growers prefer medicinal or fragrant, whorled, broadleaf or dwarf Far Eastern kupena. In the garden, in view of the prevalence of the variety, you can often see the many-flowered kupena. Plants of this species can usually grow up to 1 meter in height. The bred forms have a double pink shade of flowers, but usually the multiflorous one has the usual white flowering. All these varieties grow well in even the most unfavorable conditions and do not require special plant care.
Kupena is one of the most unpretentious plants. For cultivation, you can use absolutely any soil. They are not affected by flower diseases, do not be afraid of strong moisture and perfectly tolerate the shade of the area. Kupena reproduce by dividing their rhizomes and can grow in one place all the time. Cultivation of a multifloral kupena practically does not cause any trouble.
In Latin, the name of this plant sounds like Polygonatum , which means “perennial”. Where the stems of the plant die off every fall, a small mark remains, which is called a knee. By these marks, you can easily determine the age of the plant.

How does Kupena reproduce?
Kupena reproduces usually by seeds, which are very rarely tied, due to the fact that its pollination can occur only with the help of long-probed bumblebees. The only exception is the broadleaf kupena, it has new fruits in large quantities almost every year.
Also, this plant can reproduce vegetatively with the help of rhizome segments, which are very easy to divide. It is advisable to divide this plant in this way already at the end of August, when renewal buds are formed. You can also do this in the spring.
Seed propagation is desirable before the beginning of winter. All species of this plant germinate underground, so the location should be noted before planting. You will be able to see the first shoots of the kupena only next year, since the germination of seeds is very slow. Kupena can grow in one place for about 15 years.
