Covid-19: Brazil doubles exports of foods with vitamin C

The concern of the world population to consume foods richer in vitamin C, which help to strengthen the immune system in the fight against the new coronavirus, made Brazil more than double the export of citrus fruits in the first half of this year compared to the previous year. same period of 2019.

The data were released by the Confederation of Agriculture and Livestock of Brazil (CNA). Tangerine, orange and lemon exports rose 158%, 132% and 12%, respectively. Bananas rose 17% in the same period, in addition to strong foreign demand for vegetables.

Brazil is the world’s largest producer of orange juice (more than 50%) and, as 98% of this total is destined for export, the great demand for foods with vitamin C, caused by Covid-19, comes at a good time, increasing the profits of domestic producers.

However, it is not just the citrus industry that celebrates the good phase of Brazilian exports. Sales to the foreign market of products such as carrots, tomatoes, onions and potatoes grew by more than 300% in the first half of the year, which helped to reduce the difficulties of marketing these products in the Brazilian market.

In relation to the commercialization of coffee, the CNA reported that progress has been made. More than 40% of the 2020/21 crop has already been sold and almost 20% of the 2021/2022 crop has been sold, mainly due to the devaluation of the Real against the dollar.
