Uterine prolapse in a Cow

Prolapse of the uterus in cows is a pathology that occurs quite often after calving, especially in large farms. This is a very serious disease that can lead to lethargy and even death of a cow. The causes of the complication and methods of treating the animal will be discussed in this article. Preventive measures will help to prevent such a pathology.

Causes of complications

Weakness and flabbiness of the muscle fibers of the generic organ is almost always the main cause of its loss. After calving, such a pathology is more common, because the cervical canal opens, which facilitates the penetration of the genital organ to the outside. Consider the possible causes of complications:

  • Diseases during pregnancy.
  • Improper care of a pregnant cow.
  • Lack of regular walking of the animal.
  • Multiple pregnancy.
  • Unskilled assistance at calving – hasty or rude removal of the calf.
  • Rapid labor.
  • Dropsy of fetal membranes.
  • Tethered content of a pregnant cow in a room with a adobe floor.
  • Excessive slope of the floor (the croup of the animal is lowered).

Reference. If the animal did not move much during pregnancy, rarely walked, then the smooth muscles of the uterus weaken, as a result of this, such a complication most often occurs during childbirth.

With a hasty removal of the fetus, negative pressure is created in the intrauterine space, a piston effect occurs, as a result of which the genital organ turns out and is pushed out along with the fetus.

Evidence

It is easy to detect the fact of uterine prolapse – the organ has an impressive size. It is a kind of pear-shaped bag with venous nodes. The uterus hangs down from the vagina to the hock (with complete prolapse). At first, it is painted scarlet, but if the pathology is detected after a few hours, its tissues darken, acquire a brown, and sometimes bluish tint.

Signs of uterine prolapse

Since the fallen organ is turned outwards, the remains of the placenta are found on it, which are subject to mandatory removal. Before proceeding with the reduction of the body, it is necessary to diagnose its condition.

Diagnostics

You can do the initial inspection yourself. At the same time, pay attention to the shade of fabrics. The dark color indicates that the organ fell out a few hours ago. It is necessary to act immediately – if possible, call a veterinarian. Then you need to carefully treat the tissue with a solution of potassium permanganate at a concentration of 1%.

After this procedure, it will become easier to remove the remains of the placenta. Remove them with careful movements, trying not to damage the walls of the uterus. With prolapse of the genital organ, there is a high risk of developing necrosis and sepsis, so the uterus should be examined for necrotic foci. When they are detected, dead tissue is treated with iodine. In some cases, when the necrosis has spread greatly, it is recommended to remove the organ surgically.

Attention! Sometimes, along with the genital organ, after calving, the cow’s bladder falls out.

Treatment

A veterinarian should treat a cow with such a pathology. What does it do:

  1. Examines the organ for damage and necrotic foci.
  2. Disinfects the uterus with a disinfectant solution.
  3. Leads her.
  4. Prescribes antibiotics and antispasmodics.

Further treatment of the animal is aimed at increasing the uterine tone and preventing the development of inflammation. To do this, use hormonal drugs and antibiotics.

How to set the uterus yourself?

What to do if the uterus fell out of a cow during calving, and there is no way to call a veterinarian? We’ll have to leave all the experiences and start acting strictly according to the instructions.

  1. Wear high gloves and a rubber apron.
  2. Wash the tissues with a warm solution of potassium permanganate (1%).
  3. Delete last.
  4. Examine the uterus for damage.
  5. Treat small cracks with iodine.
  6. Wash the uterus with a glucose solution to relieve swelling.
  7. Inject the animal intramuscularly with 10 ml of corticosteroids, for example, Dexafort. This will eliminate inflammation.
  8. Proceed to the reduction of the body inside.

Rules and procedure for performing the procedure

Hanging fabrics are best wrapped gently with a bandage to reduce their size. As the organ is introduced inside, the bandages are unwound. You will need several assistants to carry out the procedure. Someone must hold the cow so that it does not move. The hand must be folded into a fist and wrapped with a waffle towel to prevent slipping. The brush is directed exactly to the center of the organ from below and they begin to press it inward. It will take a lot of effort, so this procedure should be entrusted to a physically strong person.. Upon completion of the reduction process, it is necessary to straighten the organ with your hand inside so that it takes a natural position.

Attention! The cow needs to raise her croup to avoid re-prolapse of the uterus.

Immediately after reduction, a disinfectant solution is injected into the vagina – furatsilina or potassium permanganate. To prevent the organ from falling out again, it is fixed with a special device – a pessary or the vagina is sutured.

Treatment includes the use of antibiotics of the penicillin series after the reduction of the organ for 5-6 days. This is necessary, since there is a high probability of penetration of pathogenic microorganisms and the development of endometritis.

Prevention

The following measures will help prevent prolapse of the uterus in a cow after calving:

  1. Proper maintenance of a pregnant cow – high-quality nutrition, regular walking.
  2. Prevention of diseases during pregnancy cows.
  3. Providing qualified assistance during the birth process.

Cows should be kept indoors with a level floor. Not in all cases, a person is able to influence the birth process, for example, when the uterus falls out due to rapid labor or during multiple pregnancies. But the farmer is obliged to try as soon as possible to help the cow, which has such a complication after calving. Timely intervention will avoid even more sad consequences – necrosis of the tissues of the organ and sepsis.

If after calving the uterus fell out of the cow, you can not hesitate. She needs qualified help. It is best to invite a veterinarian who will properly treat the reproductive organ, set it in place and administer the necessary medications. But not always medical care is available in the near future. In this case, you will have to act independently, adhering to the instructions. However, after providing primary care to the cow, you still need to invite a veterinarian to examine the animal and prescribe treatment.
