Understand how parts can prolong or impair engine life

Choosing original components for predictive or corrective maintenance is the right attitude to take good care of your equipment, with a guarantee of long-term productivity.

Motors used in heavy equipment, such as agricultural tractors, power generators, harvesters, construction machines, among others, are robust and demand to the limit. Basic care, such as respecting the instructions for correct use and performing preventive maintenance, are fundamental processes to increase the useful life of the equipment.

In this maintenance process, whether predictive or corrective, the correct choice of spare parts is essential. In the same way that an original and guaranteed component contributes to the efficiency and longer life of the equipment, the option for so-called parallel products has the opposite effect. In other words, putting filters (oil or air), pistons and even screws means putting the health and productivity of the machine at risk.

“The engine is the heart of every great machine and preventive actions, combined with the choice of original parts, guarantee greater productivity and availability of the equipment, avoiding long downtimes for forced maintenance”, comments Giovani Celeghini, Perkins Engine Development Coordinator of MDPower, a company of the Sotreq Group and Master Distributor of the Perkins brand in Brazil.

According to the coordinator, acquiring as much information about the application and use of the engine and/or equipment, whether through the manufacturer’s manual, the technical delivery process or the approval carried out by trained technicians, is essential to predict and assist in increasing the life of the equipment.

According to Thiago Tenório, MDPower Supervisor of Technical Support for Perkins Engines, “To meet the preventive maintenance requirements, generally presented in the equipment operation and maintenance manuals, the use of specialized labor for such maintenance and the use of original parts favor the machine quality standard”

The MDPower technical support coordinator lists some factors that hinder and prolong the good functioning of the machine. Check out:

FACTORS THAT PROLONG USEFUL LIFE:

-Use skilled labor in preventive maintenance;

-Employ genuine parts in all repairs;

-Keep the equipment clean, to check maintenance opportunities;

-Clean the engine only when it is cold and off and following the instructions in the operation and maintenance manuals. Remembering that, the ideal is to sanitize with water and non-aggressive chemicals.

HARMFUL FACTORS:

-Use unqualified labor for the use of the engine, as it can overload it or generate application problems, bringing human and property risk;

-Use non-genuine manufacturer parts;

-Perform preventive maintenance without following the instructions in the maintenance and operation manuals offered by the manufacturers;

-Do not obtain knowledge about the characteristics of the engine in its functionality;

-Do not perform preventive maintenance;

-Use diesel and oils from unreliable sources.
