COVID-19 in harvest season. What to do?

We know the gravity that not only Brazil, but the world, has faced in the face of the coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic. The need for care and attention to the health protocol tends to stop the spread of the disease.

Individually, regarding prevention, we are responsible for caring not only for ourselves but for family members and people with whom we are related.

Several sectors of the world economy take care of the employee’s health combined with the need for their survival in the market.

Thus, we see the need to maintain essential activities for the population, among others, especially agribusiness, which are professionals who do not stop, support and feed thousands of people.

The entrepreneur will need to redouble attention to the health protocol to prevent contamination by Covid-19 of his team.

In the harvest, redoubled attention

When the harvest period has arrived, it is extremely important that producers understand that it is essential to preserve the lives of rural workers and their families so that they can maintain the health of their business. Thus, all care and prevention make a difference.

The prevention of Covid-19, in rural areas, is done in several details and ensures safety.

Therefore, it is necessary to adopt measures to prevent the contagion of the new coronavirus (Covid-19), as the movement of fixed employees gains weight with the arrival of temporary employees, or the so-called seasonal workers who arrive to meet the demand of production in this period.

Agribusiness is one of the economic sectors whose physical presence is crucial: you have to plant, you have to harvest, in order to deliver the production. For this, physical presence is essential.

In this way, one of the first steps is to offer training on care and prevention of COVID-19, developing an internal awareness policy involving from management to rural workers.

It is necessary to establish a control measure and monitor compliance with the rules that promote the individual care of employees against Covid-19.

Covid-19: good practices on the farm

In addition to the training already mentioned, other practical preventive measures need to be implemented.

In the prevention of Covid-19, even compliance between people, in the field, must be done safely.

Adhering to good practices against Covid-19, specifically in cafeterias, farming, transport, accommodation, in addition to measures to contain the spread, are certainly essential forms of prevention and care:

  • Distribute gel alcohol and ensure the use of masks by all employees and service providers who have access to the property/farm;
  • encourage the Single Use objects such as cutlery and glass, among others;
  • promote the distancing from people of at least one meter;
  • It is recommended that the workers’ bathroom should be installed in a well-ventilated environment, sanitized daily and with availability of water and soap for hand hygiene;
  • promote and maintain sanitation harvesting machinery and equipment when their operators take turns in this activity;
  • do not share rides in vehicles and nor share cabin and harvesters, tractors and trucks;
  • sanitize the buses often; take all workers seated, with alcohol gel available, being possible to measure the temperature of employees before boarding and those who have a fever, isolate at home;
  • Truck drivers or service providers must be careful: remain with the truck during delivery or loading of goods;
  • not lend cell phone, radio, PPE, headphones and others;
  • avoid as much as possible people over 60 in the workplace and those prone to contagion;
  • If there is a communication of contagion, request or refer the employee who shows symptoms of the virus such as fever, sore throat, cough and shortness of breath to the health care centers, and the contagion is proven, take it away immediately.

Conclusion

Therefore, it is necessary to develop effective prevention measures that allow the continuity of work in the field against Covid-19. Pandemic is a serious matter and requires awareness, care and commitment.
