What is a parthenocarpic cucumber hybrid? Where to plant them: in a greenhouse or in open ground?

Who are parthenocarpics and why are they needed? Let’s talk!

In fact, everything is very simple: parthenocarpic or parthenocarpic cucumbers are called hybrids that do not need pollination and do not set seeds, that is, you will not find the usual β€œseeds” in cucumbers collected from such a plant.

In general, the taste and quality of parthenocarpic cucumbers are the same as those of bee-pollinated ones. The belonging of the hybrid to the number of parthenocarpic is usually indicated on the packaging, often with the clarification that flowering in plants is female, that is, there are no male flowers.

The difference between parthenocarpics and self-pollinating cucumber hybrids

Parthenocarpic and self-pollinating hybrids are not the same thing.

In self-pollinated, each flower is essentially bisexual, that is, it has a pistil and stamens and is able to pollinate itself. However, often gardeners and seed producers do not go into details and put an equal sign between these concepts.

Indeed, from the point of view of agricultural technology and crop quality, there are practically no differences between these two varieties, but there is one feature.Β

Unlike parthenocarpic cucumbers (which do not require pollination), self-pollinating cucumber varieties must still use the pollen of a male flower on the pistil of a female flower belonging to the same plant. Self-pollinating cucumbers are ideal for growing indoors, such as greenhouses, or growing indoors in containers. However, just because these strains are self-pollinating doesn’t mean they do all the work themselves. To move pollen, air circulation around the plants is needed. This ensures that pollen is transferred from male to female flowers. But if there is no airflow, hand pollination may be required for best results.

Popular parthenocarpic cucumber hybrids

Parthenocarpic cucumber F1 White Angel

Mid-season hybrid (50-55 days from germination to fruiting) with a high degree of parthenocarpy, intended for cultivation both in film greenhouses and in open ground.

Plants are vigorous, form many side shoots. In the axils of the leaves, 1-2 ovaries are formed. The fruits are short (6-8 cm), with rare tubercles, white.

They should be harvested when they turn a faint greenish tint. The fruits are consumed both fresh and canned.

AGROHOLDING “POISK”

An early maturing parthenocarpic hybrid of a female flowering type, suitable for outdoor and greenhouse cultivation. The period from germination to harvest is 38–42 days.

The plant is vigorous, branching is weak. Lateral shoots with limited type of growth. 2-3 ovaries are formed in the node. The fruits are cylindrical, 10–12 cm long, 3,5–4 cm in diameter, weighing 110–130 g, dark green, white-thorned, large-tuberculate.

The hybrid is resistant to cucumber mosaic virus, olive blotch and tolerant to powdery mildew. Used for fresh consumption and canning.

AGROHOLDING “POISK”

Parthenocarpic early ripe, female type of flowering, is distinguished by the attractive appearance of greens and the fact that its root system has a high suction capacity even on soils with a high salt content.

At the nodes, 2-3 ovaries are formed. Zelentsy is cylindrical in shape, 10–12 cm long, dark green in color with white pubescence, does not outgrow for a long time.
