What is the difference between annual and perennial flowers?

Annual garden flowers

In terms of their beauty, such flowers are not inferior to perennial ones. There are a very large number of species of this type. You can easily use annual flowers to decorate your garden or grow them for chic bouquets. Usually, poppy, calendula, aster and marigold are considered annual flowers, but they also include perennial flowers that cannot withstand severe winters, therefore they are grown only for one year. For example, these are petunia, snapdragon and begonia. It is important to note that annual garden flowers tend to multiply by seed, so each year, these seeds are harvested for replanting the following year. However, some of these plants are usually planted using prepared seedlings.

Perennial garden flowers

Usually biennial plants are also included in this group. Since very often, when sowing such flowers, in the first year they form only a rosette of leaves, and the seeds appear only the next year. Many of the perennial flowers are represented by a large number of varieties and have excellent frost resistance, which helps them withstand the harsh Russian winters and temperature extremes.

It is important to note that there is another system by which it is customary to separate groups of plants. These are bulbous and corms.

Bulbous garden plants include tulip, lily, daffodil and others. The fact is that the organs of these plants, which are underground, are usually called a bulb. Such plants have an important plus in the fact that they can grow in one area for many years, and the fact that they are not afraid of any winters and frosts. In autumn, the terrestrial part of such flowers usually dies off, and then germinates again the next year. Some of these plants should be lightly covered if the temperature is below -25 degrees during the winter.

Tuberous flowers include begonias, gladioli, dahlias and others. This type of flower is very common in gardens. The underground organ of such a plant is a corm or tuber. Unfortunately, such plants cannot winter outdoors, so the root tuber should be dug up every year and stored in a warm place until next spring.
