We choose the most delicious and fruitful cucumbers: for pickling, salads and growing at home

How to choose cucumbers so that they meet your expectations from this crop as much as possible? For open ground, both parthenocarpic and bee-pollinated cucumbers are suitable; for a greenhouse, it is better to give preference to parthenocarpic cucumbers. Then it’s up to taste preferences.

Choosing cucumbers: mini gherkins

How to surprise experienced gardeners, neighbors and relatives? Try to offer them mini-gherkins in crispy blanks. One “mayonnaise” jar includes up to 120 such fruits! Many will say what a surprise here: take any cucumbers and collect when they have not reached their size, and you will get a great snack for one bite. But it’s not! Such an appetizer can only be obtained from certain varieties. At SeDeK, these are: F1 Son of the Regiment, F1 Philippok, F1 Moth, F1 Boy Scout. These hybrids, even at the stage of pickles 2-4 cm in length, look like plump cucumbers, and not elongated thin ovaries. And they are crunchy! The collection of such one-, two-day ovaries will bring you 60-90 cucumbers from 1m 2 at once. And the more often you harvest the fruits, the greater the harvest.

Secret from “SeDeK”: To pickle gherkins, you need to harvest daily, and sometimes 2 times a day! Moreover, it is better to do this in the morning and immediately send them to a cold place so that the cucumbers are better preserved for harvesting.

What are the advantages of mini-gherkins?

You can put jars of fruits of different sizes on the table. Believe me, it looks very appetizing!
    • 1-2 days old ovaries (2-4cm pickles), you can preserve in 300-400ml jars
    • 2 days (4-6 cm) – in jars 500-700 ml
    • 6-8 cm – in a liter container
cucumbers F1 Son of the Regiment, F1 Philippok, F1 Moth, F1 Boy Scout and others crunch so that not only in the mouth – crunches behind the ears.

Choosing cucumbers: beam varieties and hybrids

Many gardeners simply “fan” from cucumbers with bunch formation of ovaries, and, as they say, they chase them around all the stores. We also have such cucumbers: F1 Cheerful company ®, F1 Friendly family ®.

Up to 8 greens can form in the internodes of beam hybrids! Of course, when growing beam hybrids, you must take into account that the land in the greenhouse where they are grown must change regularly, soil fertility must be at a high level, and the plants themselves receive sufficient mineral nutrition, since growing cucumbers quickly depletes the soil. Otherwise, these intensive-type hybrids will not be able to feed so many “mouths” (cucumbers) in one node and will “get rid” of extra ovaries. But, if you observe crop rotation and apply a sufficient amount of organic fertilizers, then it will not be difficult for you to get such phenomenal yields as in our photo.

We choose reliable varieties and hybrids of cucumbers for a cold summer

Choosing varieties of cucumbers for barrel pickling

Probably there is not a single Russian person who would indifferently pass by the counters with pickles, where cucumbers of direct barrel salting lie in even rows. But the key to the success of such an appetizer is not only the method of harvesting, the choice of varieties plays a big role in the quality of vigorous cucumbers. They should be crispy, without voids, have a rich taste. And how can you do without the good old classics? In our company, we not only follow modern breeding achievements, but also preserve our good varieties, which were grown, perhaps, by our grandmothers: Vyaznikovsky 37, Far East 27, Monastyrsky, Nezhinsky, Parade, Reliable – this is the basis of the foundations of successful cucumbers for barrel salting, so choosing them, you will get blanks exactly like those of our grandmothers.

Choosing long-fruited cucumbers: alligators for salad and not only

Many gardeners have long been familiar with a series of long-fruited cucumbers. For some reason, some still treat them with suspicion, without even trying, but the ranks of those who have tried and loved these cucumbers are constantly expanding. And this is not surprising: it is difficult to find more tender, sweeter and more fragrant cucumber hybrids. Legends can be made about their resistance to adverse conditions and productivity. So, cucumbers are “alligators”.

Contrary to popular belief that alligator cucumbers are only suitable for salads, we responsibly declare that yes, they are incomparable in salads and any other fresh form, but they are also great for pickling in sliced uXNUMXbuXNUMXbbarrels or slices the height of the can.

The main advantages of long-fruited cucumbers:

– Attractive length for salad up to 45 or even more, large-tuberous fruits with a smooth spout. But you can pick them, of course, in the amount of 25-35 cm.

– Very tasty and sweet, and this is one of their main qualities. The pulp on the cut is dense, without voids: cut the cucumber and you will see how the juice comes out of the pulp. And if gherkins often have a bitter taste, then this will not happen with the “alligator”.

– High productivity. We often hear: we don’t know what to do with the harvest, we don’t have time to eat, we have to distribute it. We love these kinds of complaints. When the “alligators” are at the peak of fruiting, then on one plant you can see 6-8 fruits at the same time and the same number of small greens. And from one plant per season you can collect up to 20 kg of fruit! When other varieties stop fruiting, the “alligator” continues to bear fruit. They bear fruit very compactly, on the main stem. The harvest is immediately visible.

– Precocity. They can be planted several times per season. For example, on the SeDeK experimental site, the first sowing in the greenhouse is carried out in March, and already on the May holidays in the greenhouse, several long fruits can be harvested from the plant. The last sowing can be carried out in August.

– The fruits do not outgrow, which is very convenient for summer residents who rarely come to their site. If the gherkin, outgrowing, begins to turn yellow, “get fat” and lose its taste, then the “alligator” retains its marketable appearance on the plant for a long time.

– High adaptability to weather conditions.

Secrets from “SeDeK”: We would like to share with you the special secrets of growing these cucumbers, but in fact there are none. If you have already grown any other cucumbers, then these problems should not arise. Perhaps the only feature: the plants need to be tied up. When they grow without a garter, the fruits curl up and no longer look so attractive. They should not encounter obstacles in their path, so as not to deform.

The bottom 3-4 knots need to be blinded. And then each shoot on the plant must be pinched for 2-3 cucumbers. The main crop, as already mentioned, goes on the main stem.

If you have questions about growing cucumbers – “alligators” or you have a bad experience in growing them, write in the comments, we will try to help! If the experience is successful, write too.

Choosing the best cucumber hybrids: a series of world masterpieces

We have collected the best hybrids of cucumbers in the “Musical” cucumbers series. The names by which the hybrids of the series are named are the classics of the highest, world level, the most famous composers. So our cucumbers are classics of the highest level in the field of breeding. One of the most high-yielding, disease-resistant, adaptive hybrids, which are analogues of well-known foreign varieties.

Cucumbers of the “musical” series will be your inspiration at all stages of cultivation, as they will not create any problems. Seedlings are characterized by intensive uniform growth, giving a powerful, “fat” leaf. After planting in a greenhouse, the plant takes root well and is highly resistant to diseases (powdery mildew, cladosporiosis, root rot), temperature extremes, cold, and shade tolerance. All “musical” hybrids are parthenocarpics with a predominantly or 100% female flowering type. They can be grown in a greenhouse, on a balcony or loggia. In a greenhouse, of course, they will reveal their full potential.

The fruits of “musical” hybrids have a dense dark green skin, which helps them not to deteriorate for a long time. They are genetically without bitterness, juicy, with a slight sweetness in taste, very fragrant. Due to their properties, they are ideal not only for home cultivation, but also for large-scale production. Therefore, these varieties are purchased in large quantities by farmers. In addition, due to their high resistance to lack of light, these cucumbers can be grown in extended rotation, increasing the sales season.

Each cucumber has its own culinary purpose. For example, hybrid greens F1 Beethoven, F1 Mozart, F1 Salieri, F1 Richter F1 Prokofiev, F1 Chopin – gherkin type: large and often tuberculate, 11–13 cm long. Due to the excellent taste without bitterness, the fruits are suitable for salads and for preparations. Zelentsy do not lose their rich, uniform dark green color in a jar and, most importantly, do not form voids and are perfectly crunchy. F1 Mozart и F1 Salieri – earlier, begin to bear fruit 43-45 days after germination, give a surprisingly abundant harvest – 17-26 kg per 1 m2.

More suitable for salads and low salt F1 Mendelssohn, F1 Musical Fingers, F1 Paganini Fingers. Their “shirt” (skin) is distinguished by a rarer arrangement of tubercles, and the pulp is sweet.

Cucumbers of the “salad” type from this series include F1 Strauss, F1 Schubert, F1 Vivaldi. They have smooth fruits without bitterness, very juicy. Plants look very elegant, as the fruits are located on the main stem, and they are always clearly visible. It is these plants that turn your greenhouse into a real production site – they look very professional.
