Gulliver potatoes: description and characteristics, reviews

The Gulliver potato variety is one of the best varieties bred by domestic breeders. Despite the fact that the culture was received not so long ago, in 2015, the vegetable has already acquired fans, leaving a lot of positive reviews about it. Since 2018, the variety has passed official registration in the State Register and is suitable for cultivation throughout the country. The main characteristics of plants and tubers are presented in the description of the variety with a photo.

Variety description

Employees of the A.G. Lorkha “developed together with agronomists LLC” Agrocenter Korenevo “an early-maturing variety for table use. For breeding potatoes, 2 well-known varieties of culture were used: Concorde and Adora. Gulliver was initially zoned into the central and central black earth regions, but practice has shown that tubers ripen successfully in colder regions. Due to its good drought resistance, the variety can be grown in the south.

The tubers ripen early. From the moment of germination to full harvesting, no more than 70 days pass. You can dig in and taste the first potatoes 45 days after planting. Plants are large, erect stem. leafiness is average. Leaves are dark green in color, large, intermediate type. During the flowering period, the inflorescences are red-violet in color.

On each potato bush of Gulliver, 7-12 large tubers of oval or round shape are simultaneously formed. The weight of each fruit can reach 120-150 g. The skin is light-colored, smooth, transparent. The pulp in the context is creamy. The eyes are located on the surface, but they are almost invisible. The yield when grown on fertile soil and subject to agricultural technology is very good: the indicator is 370 c / ha. By 45-50 days after the appearance of the tops, it is possible to dig in 200-250 centners of potatoes. The variety is suitable for long-term storage, keeping quality is 95%, fruit marketability does not fall below 90%.

On a note!

Due to its high yield and unpretentious cultivation, Gulliver is suitable for cultivation on an industrial scale, it can be planted in the production areas of large agricultural firms.

Gulliver received a high taste rating both among agronomists and among ordinary gardeners. The starch content is 14-15%. When boiling, the tubers are not too boiled, the slices do not lose their shape, since the pulp is dense and slightly mealy. Potatoes can be used for baking, mashed potatoes, soups and salads, frying and cooking in their skins.

Gulliver is resistant to most potato diseases and pests. Plants and tubers are weakly affected by banded mosaics, common scab, potato crayfish, late blight. Sometimes there are cases of nematode infection, so agronomists advise protecting the crop in time and carrying out preventive treatment. Of the advantages, the following are noted:

  • early ripening;
  • large fruits of a presentation;
  • high yield;
  • drought resistance;
  • simple, undemanding care;
  • good immune abilities;
  • universal purpose;
  • long-term storage.

No obvious flaws in the variety have yet been identified. Due to its low popularity, the variety is only gaining popularity among summer residents.

Features of landing

Gulliver potatoes: description and characteristics, reviews

Gulliver is most often grown by direct planting of tubers in the ground. Since the variety is new, when buying planting material, you need to carefully examine it: you can run into a fake or poor quality product. It is better to order and purchase potatoes from reliable suppliers and distributors. A summer cottage without shaded areas is suitable for growing, in a sunny place the plants will germinate quickly, and the fruits will reach maturity earlier. Before landing, preparatory procedures are carried out:

  • the tubers are germinated in advance. To do this, at the end of April (after the 20th numbers), they take out the selected planting material, select only healthy vegetables without signs of damage and leave them in a warm sunny place to build up the shoots;
  • the land is plowed, organic fertilizers are applied: mullein, chicken, ash, eggshells.

Attention!

For planting, you need to take medium-sized fruits. If the potatoes are too large, with a mass of 100 g or more, they are cut, but so that at least 2-3 shoots remain on each half.

The planting of Gulliver is started not earlier than the beginning of May. The exceptions are the southern regions, where spring comes much earlier. The optimal time for planting work is chosen when the earth warms up to a depth of 20 cm to +10 degrees. If you plant the tubers early, they can freeze, which will delay the ripening period and reduce keeping quality.

When landing Gulliver, a few simple requirements are observed:

  • fruits are planted to a depth of no more than 20 cm;
  • if there are slopes on the site, then the rows are placed across the slope;
  • between adjacent bushes, it is necessary to retreat a distance of at least 30 cm, and between rows – at least 50 cm;
  • for additional nutrition, ash, rotted manure can be added to the planting holes.

Potatoes sprout together in the second week after planting. Sometimes plants appear a little later, this may be due to the unfavorable climate of the region.

Further Care

Gulliver potatoes: description and characteristics, reviews

After 2-3 weeks after germination, you can start weeding the potatoes. Weeds literally squeeze out young shoots, interfere with the development of the vegetable. You can weed potatoes once a week, but at least once every 3-4 weeks. When weeding, in addition to removing foreign grass, the earth is saturated with oxygen, and the tubers subsequently develop better. After weeding, when the tops reach a height of 10-15 cm, the potatoes are spud. The soil in the aisles is again loosened and raked onto the bush.

Immediately after flowering, so that the Colorado potato beetle does not attack Gulliver, it is recommended to spray the bushes with chemicals or use folk remedies for processing. The insect poses a danger to the plant and to the future harvest, therefore prevention cannot be neglected. Together with the beetle, the wireworm is dangerous for tubers. The pest feeds on the pulp of the fruits themselves, spoils them, which is why they quickly rot and are no longer suitable for food. There are many effective insecticides against the wireworm that will help kill the pest and preserve the crop.

Gulliver is considered a drought-resistant variety, but from time to time the bushes need to be watered, especially in the absence of rain for a long time. With a lack of moisture in the soil, the development of the culture is inhibited: the tubers cannot gain weight, and the tops look sluggish, the leaves curl. Water the plants under the root with cool water; it should not be allowed that the drops fall on the leaves and flowers.

Harvesting and storage of crops

Gulliver’s harvest is harvested in the second half of the summer. The tubers are dug up, sorted by size and rotted are discarded. If the potatoes have mechanical damage, then such a vegetable is not suitable for storage. The selected fruits are dried from moisture for at least 5-7 days. During this time, the skin will harden, and the earth will dry up and move away by itself. Fruits are put in bags or wooden boxes with slots and stored.

Gulliver has good keeping quality, therefore, if the storage conditions are met, the fruits can last even until next summer, while maintaining the taste and presentation. It is impossible to keep potatoes at home in large quantities, the tubers will sprout quickly, and the pulp will lose firmness. You can store crops in basements, cellars, garages, glazed balconies and verandas.

On a note!

When preparing for storage, potatoes should never be washed. This will significantly shorten the shelf life of the vegetable.

Reviews of gardeners

Peter S.

The Gulliver variety was advised by my friend to plant. I took several fruits for testing, and already 2 months after planting, I decided to dig in. The tubers are even, but there are not many of them, about 6-8 pieces on each bush. The taste is excellent, the fruits boiled quickly. For the entire cultivation time, I only processed the plants 2 times from the Colorado potato beetle, and so the potatoes did not hurt anything.

Galina

We plant Gulliver every year, this is the most successful early variety. The old potatoes of last year are still kept in the cellar and they taste normal, there is no sweetness. Before planting, I add a little ash to the ground, about a glass per square meter, and pour onion peels into the prepared holes so that insects do not eat potatoes, this helps in the future.
