Chickens: Treating Constipation in Chickens

From time to time, poultry farmers are faced with such a disease in their chickens as constipation. It is a non-communicable disease and is mainly associated with the improper maintenance of chicks and their irrational feeding.

The first signs of constipation in feathered pets are strange behavior. Their appetite sharply and significantly decreases, they become lethargic, depressed. Feces in chickens with constipation are very scarce, very hard, sometimes even stony. Litter comes out with great difficulty, and the chicks try in every possible way to help themselves, while they scream and push hard.

Constipation refers to diseases of the digestive system. But finding it is only a small part. In fact, this disease hides a severe pathology.

In the modern world, constipation in chickens is quite rare. They occur mainly with atrophy of the stomach, when small feathered pets eat a lot of starchy foods, or do not eat gravel with food. In addition to difficulties with bowel movements, with atrophy of the stomach, the bird experiences thirst, exhaustion and constant hunger.

Constipation can also be observed if the chicks are overheated or hypothermic. Another reason for the appearance of such a disease is obesity. In this case, the movement of feces in the intestine slows down in the bird. It is also possible that constipation occurs due to high muscle tension. In the end, parasites that develop in the body, such as helminthiasis, can affect the difficulty in defecation of chickens.

Treatment of chickens for constipation should begin with the normalization of the stool. If the disease is caused by parasites, anthelmintic drugs should be given to the chicks: metronidazole or vermox. In case of intestinal upset or stomach atrophy, small feathered pets need to include gravel, crushed grain, and finely chopped greens in the diet.

The main thing, before starting treatment, is to identify the cause of the onset of the disease. Only then will it be possible to quickly and effectively eliminate the pathology.
