Self-seeding flowers are good in that they do not need to be planted every time anew – they have sown once and forgotten. They require virtually no maintenance. It is only necessary to comply with the main condition – in order for self-seeding to occur, wilted inflorescences cannot be removed. Here are the representatives of such plants.
Solar rudbeckia
One of the brightest and most beautiful flowers in the garden is rudbeckia. Yellow, orange or purple sun inflorescences appear in July and remain until frost begins.
Depending on the variety, the height of the stems can reach 40-130 cm. Rudbeckia seeds are sown in open ground at the end of May. The site must be well lit. The emerging sprouts are thinned out, leaving a distance of about 30 cm between the shoots to provide the sun-loving culture with a sufficient amount of light.
Rudbeckia will start blooming next year. A perennial plant is unpretentious to the soil composition. Can grow on clay soils and loam. Fertile lands are undesirable – rudbeckia will grow leaves to the detriment of flowering.
Poppy seed
The flowers of the samoseyka poppy are white, pink, red or purple. Sometimes there are “eyes” on the petals, intricate bright patterns and stripes.
The plant loves sunny places, but it can grow in a small shade. Poppy is not picky about the composition of the soil, but it grows and blooms best of all on fertile soil enriched with lime. The cultivation of self-seeding poppy does not cause any particular hassle. It is enough to sow seeds in the ground in early spring.
Too dense seedlings are recommended to thin out. The plant is unpretentious in care, it tolerates cold well, but waterlogged soil can become destructive for it, because his roots quickly begin to rot. In good conditions, poppy bushes with bright and large flowers can grow up to 130-140 cm.
Fragrant tobacco
Fragrant tobacco with white, red, yellow, pink or crimson star flowers is very popular with gardeners. Its amazing scent attracts bees to the site. The most fragrant are flowers with a pale color.
As a rule, flowers open in the evening, at sunset. At this time, they begin to smell even stronger. Fragrant tobacco blooms from mid-summer to autumn.
An ornamental plant is not demanding on the soil, but if the soil is poor, then in the fall it must be dug up, humus or compost must be added. The plant does not like direct sunlight and strong winds.
When planting in the ground, the distance between the bushes should be 20-30 cm. This is a heat-loving plant, therefore it is planted only in the complete absence of frost at night.
In the middle lane, fragrant tobacco can multiply by self-seeding, but in the absence of snow in winter and frosty weather in spring, there may not be seedlings. Therefore, most often for the winter, fragrant tobacco is transplanted into pots and removed indoors. In the spring, the bushes are transplanted into open ground again.
Annual delphinium
Delphinium, also known as larkspur, is an extraordinarily beautiful plant with nearly a hundred vibrant flowers. The stem can reach over a meter in height.
Delphinium seeds are sown in the ground immediately to a permanent place, since the seedlings do not tolerate transplants well. They are lightly sprinkled with a small layer of earth. The best time for planting is March-April or September-October, as they need cool air (no higher than 10-15 degrees) and moisture for good germination.
A delphinium sown once will subsequently reproduce by self-seeding.
Plain petunia
There are a huge number of varieties of petunias, and each is good in its own way. But among all this variety, only ordinary, monochromatic, not terry, multiplies by self-seeding. At the same time, the color of flowers can change annually, as the plants will be pollinated.
Self-seeding petunias are very unpretentious. It is believed that they can literally grow on the sand. Bright, fragrant flowers last until the first frost.
To keep the plants looking well-groomed and flowering more densely, the growing shoots need to be pruned / pinched every week. To maximize the possibility of self-seeding of petunias, it must be planted in areas protected from the wind.
Pansies
Pansies amaze with a variety of colors and shades. They grow well in sunny areas. In the shade, the flowers become smaller, and the plant itself grows longer. They grow poorly in damp places where water stagnates.
Seeds are sown in open ground in June-July, the plants will bloom next year, and will bloom from April until the first frost. Pansies are resistant to frost, but poorly tolerate winters with little snow. Spring thaws with night frosts are especially dangerous for them. For the winter, the flower bed needs to be covered.
In order for pansies to multiply by self-seeding, you need to leave seed pods on the plants. After they are ripe and open, the seeds will crumble into the soil. There is no need to touch the ground, the seeds will sprout by themselves.
All you need to do is thin out the seedlings. Plants are pollinated among themselves and can change their color and size. To preserve the purity of the species, different varieties must be planted at some distance from each other.
Snapdragon
Snapdragon, or Antirrinum, pleases gardeners with a wide variety of flower colors. He is able to decorate flower beds, lawns, curbs, terraces. Its flowering continues until the onset of frost in the fall.
The frost-resistant snapdragon tolerates overwintering well in the open field. To do this, in the fall, the bushes of antirrinum must be cut very shortly – the height of the stems should reach 5-8 cm. After that, you need to mulch the area with dried foliage or sawdust mixed with peat.
