Cissus rhombifolia cultivation

Today we present another indoor plant that has been with us for a long time. Cissus rhombifolia. We put the scientific name because it has as many names as leaves. Cissus, Kangaroo Vine, Grape Ivy, Roicide, Apartment Vine, Indoor Vine, Vine Ivy.

Many names for a single plant, but the set of them already gives an idea of the type. Names such as vine or ivy already indicate that it is a climber.

Origin of the genus Cissus

The gender Cissus It is a cousin of vines, hence the name. They belong to the same family Vitaceae and they have to resemble each other in something. They are the two climbers.

The gender Cissus It has its origin in almost the entire planet in the tropics, although its distribution is currently practically worldwide.

Within this genus there are more than 300 species, among which there are some more famous than others and the species rhombifolia is one of the most popular for being a leafy and rustic houseplant.

Uses and possibilities at home

In suitable climatic zones for this plant, it is usually found dressing and covering the walls of farms and houses. Indoors it is a plant chosen basically for its hanging and climbing character thanks to its tendrils.

For this reason it is usually used in high places such as shelves and shelves. When we say that it does not have “grapes” it is that we will not see it bloom (if it does bloom, it is nothing spectacular and goes unnoticed) and less fruit indoors but it does have fruit. It is a black purplish berry.

Care Cissus rhombifolia

Temperature

It is a plant that needs rather cool temperatures. Indoors, it is possible that it can suffer in very hot areas since its optimum is between 5ºC and 20ºC, so summer temperatures of more than 22-25ºC can make the plant suffer.

Light and Shade

If we want to see her grow vigorous, there is no better way than to give her a bright but not direct place. The direct sun greatly affects its development and it is immediately noticeable as the leaves burn (the brown tips begin to be seen).

It is a plant that is usually located in cool and semi-shady places inside the home. The reason is that by requiring cooler temperatures and tolerate shade, make it perfect for its location in the shadiest areas.

A very common place can be the bathroom as long as it has outside light.

Irrigation

Moderate and variable depending on the season. There is a lot of difference between summer and winter. In summer we may have to water a couple of times a week and spread the waterings until the arrival of winter.

During the cold season, the reference for the frequency of irrigation will be to leave the substrate dry between waterings. Spray the foliage with water (without lime) it is favorable, especially in months of intense heat, when it is almost necessary.

Substrate and subscriber

There are no particularities in the substrate so one universal It will be enough. We can give it a boost with liquid fertilizer for green plants, especially if it is located in somewhat darker places where the development will be less vigorous.

Fertilizer can help, mixed with irrigation water 2 times a month.

Pruning

Pruning is recommended for two reasons. We control its growth and also we rejuvenate the plant. It supports pruning very well, even if they are intense.

Multiplication of Cissus rhombifolia

Cutting it is the easiest option. Like most plants, the best time is spring, cutting a stem of about 10 cm. The basal leaves are removed and it blunts.

If we want more leafiness in the future, it is advisable to put more than one cutting in the same pot. The rooting can be tricky. Growth hormones can be used if desired.
