When and how to plant grapes in open ground?

Grapes are one of the most beloved and frequently grown crops among modern gardeners. Such it is not only because of the delicious fruits, but also because of the appearance. Many use grapes as a hedge or a live canopy. An integral part of care is planting a crop in open ground. This article will tell you about the main points of this procedure, as well as about some of its nuances.

Landing dates in the fall

In autumn, grapes are usually replanted in October. They do this throughout the month. It is during this period that the air temperature ranges from 5 to 15 degrees Celsius, being the most suitable for planting. After the onset of the first cold snap, it is necessary to have time to complete the transplant within three weeks. After this period, the likelihood of frost is high, and the bush simply does not have time to take root.

During the autumn transplant, you need to prepare an insulating shelter for the bush. No need to land immediately after sudden changes in temperature. It is categorically impossible to plant a crop immediately after a sharp cold snap.

Time and technology of planting grapes in spring

Proper planting in the spring involves a number of steps.

  • First of all, you need to choose the right place. It is not necessary to plant a crop in wetlands or where water accumulates. Grapes do not tolerate drafts well, and they should not be planted in the northern part of the local area. Ideally, the planting site should be located on the south side of the site, and also be protected from the north by a wall, hedge or fruit trees. The soil here should be loosened and saturated with organic matter. The plant should be planted at a distance of 4 meters or more from other bushes, trees.
  • The next step is to prepare the hole. It must be dug at least 3 weeks before planting. The depth of the pit should be about 1 meter. Drainage material (usually gravel or crushed stone) is placed at the bottom of the pit. The earth dug out of the pit is divided into two parts. One part is mixed with 15 kg of humus, 1 kg of ash, and 0,5 kg of superphosphate, and poured back into the pit. A small layer of earth is poured on top, and 3 buckets of water are poured. In this form, the pit remains for 3 weeks so that the soil in it settles and compacts.
  • The next step is the seedling is processed and prepared for subsequent planting. First you need to inspect the vine. If there are traces of fungus, rot or other diseases on the roots, then it is better to refuse planting. If the bush is healthy, then it is soaked in pre-boiled and cooled water with a few drops of Kornevin for 24 hours. A day later, you need to re-examine the roots. In the presence of diseases or pests, you need to replace the seedling with a healthy one. If the seedling is healthy, then after soaking, the upper roots are completely removed, and the heel roots are cut off by 10-15 cm. 4 eyes should remain on the seedling. After pruning, it must be treated with a fungicide.
  • It is necessary to carry out the landing itself. A little earth is poured into a pre-prepared pit so that a small mound forms. A seedling is placed on it. The roots are completely and neatly straightened. Further, they begin to gradually fill the soil into the pit, holding the seedling. It is necessary to fill the hole in this way completely, and pour 3 buckets of water.

If grape bushes are planted in one row, then the distance between them must be at least 1 meter. The minimum distance between rows is 2 meters.

Best timing for different regions

Especially important are the timing for the spring planting of grapes.. In the south of Russia in spring, it is best to plant grapes in open ground in mid-April. Usually during this period the temperature rises to +15 degrees, which is considered optimal for planting. However, during this period, the probability of frost remains quite high, and therefore it is imperative to provide shelter to protect from the cold. In regions where the climate is cooler (central Russia and the Moscow region), planting should be done later, in May. The best period is the last days of May. At this time, the air temperature reaches +15 degrees, at which, as already mentioned, it is best to transplant.

A good time for replanting grapes in regions such as Siberia and the Urals is mid-June. However, this is not always the best solution. It is recommended to analyze the climate for the last 5-10 years and guess at what time the air temperature will reach +15 degrees. And also you need to take measurements of air temperature from the end of spring in order not to miss the moment when the mark reaches +15 degrees. It is this time that can be considered truly optimal for transplanting a crop into open ground.

In the warm regions of the country (in the south), the crop is planted from mid-October until mid-November. In central Russia, crops can be planted in early October. In cold regions, grapes can be planted in September. It is best to do this at the end of September, but an earlier landing is also allowed. It is worth noting that professionals do not have a definite answer to the question of whether it is better to plant grapes in autumn or spring.

Each period has its own characteristics. Choosing between the two options, you need to rely on the region of growth, air temperature, as well as your own preferences.
