Preparing the land for cabbage seedlings

Zaraziha (lat. Orobanche)

Plant-parasite of the broomrape family, belongs to the genus chlorophyll-free perennial or annual herbaceous. The family has more than 150 species, and the most common are 40. This diversity is explained by the wide range of plants that become hosts for the broomrape. The most dangerous are those species that affect sunflower, fodder, vegetables and melons.

First of all, collect leaves and stumps from the vacated cabbage beds, and then burn them away from the garden. Next, sprinkle the area with wood ash and dig up. It is best for new plantings to choose an area where cabbage has not grown for several years, this action will protect the plants from last year’s pests in the soil layers.

Put a ball of rotten leaves and cut grass 30-40 cm high in previously prepared deep wooden boxes, tamp and fill with soil to the top. Next, choose an elevated, sunny place and leave the containers for the whole winter.

In early spring, when it gets warmer outside, cover the boxes with plastic wrap and leave it alone for a few days to warm up the ground. After this period, sow cabbage seeds lightly and immediately cover with foil. Moisten the sprouts as it warms – the higher the temperature rises, the more often you water them. As a result, you will get strong and high-quality seedlings that can form weighty heads of cabbage.
