Multi-tiered and raised flower beds: design rules

Multi-tiered flower beds as an element of landscape design are found in our country more and more often, but still remain a novelty. Such a flower bed looks very original, impressive, voluminous, it takes up less space than usual, since the lower tier is not too large, and all subsequent ones are of a smaller area. Many summer residents create tiered flower beds with their own hands, making their garden more attractive and bright.

There are many options for creating a multi-tiered flower bed using various materials. The main thing is that the design does not seem cumbersome, but looks elegant. When creating vertical flower beds, you need to pay attention to the background. The best background for such a flower bed is the greenery of the lawn, hedges or bushes.

The type of flower bed largely depends on the flowers: when using flowers of the same color, it will look completely different than the one planted with multi-colored flowers.

Designers do not advise using flowers of different sizes in the same tier. Multi-tiered flower beds look very organic if flowers with the largest inflorescences are planted in the lower tier, and smaller flowers are used in subsequent ones. But if flowers are used in all tiers, the size of which is approximately the same, the flower bed also looks great.

The result is a beautiful volumetric flower bed that will decorate any corner of the garden. Flowers are well matched in color for each tier, forming a harmonious combination

The design of this type of flower bed is such that water from the lower tiers will flow out, collecting at the bottom. Accordingly, for the lowest tier, you need to pick up moisture-loving flowers and plants and make drainage, and for the upper ones – those that are not afraid of drought. When creating a multi-tiered flower bed, choose flowers with long flowering that bloom at the same time – this way the flower bed will retain an attractive appearance for a long time and does not need to be updated. Although some people, on the contrary, like to change the appearance of the flower bed during the summer, planting new flowers. It’s a matter of taste.

How to create a continuous flowering flower bed:

To create a multi-tiered flower bed, such unpretentious flowers as pansies, petunia, nasturtium, pelargonium, begonia, calendula, marigolds are suitable. Flowers can be combined as you like. If the flowers of the same plant have different colors, such as pansies, begonias or petunias, you can create a beautiful flower bed using only one plant of different colors. Working on a multi-tiered flower bed is a creativity where you are practically unlimited. Unleash your imagination and you can create a real masterpiece in your garden.

Building blocks

The building block can act as a container for flowers from which a flower garden can be assembled. Blocks made of porous concrete are lightweight, it is convenient to plant flowers in a recess inside. A recess is dug in the ground in the shape of a flower bed, a layer of rubble is poured down. Then, tier by tier, in accordance with the chosen shape, blocks are laid out, earth is poured into them and flowers are planted.

Flowerbed of blocks

To create a vertical tiered flower bed, special trays with a truncated side are used. Such a flower bed will not have problems with the outflow of water from the upper tiers, you just need to create a good drainage layer at the bottom

Tray blocks have truncated sides, produced by construction firms specifically for flower beds. Tier structures and flower beds can be made according to a special order in one of the companies that deals with this.

Old tires

A tire bed can be a decoration for your garden if you get creative, paint old tires and arrange them in an interesting way. As for any vertical flower bed, drainage is done at the bottom – expanded clay, crushed stone, branches. The tires are cut across and then into strips, the largest being used as the bottom base. The lower strip, rolled into a ring, is slightly deepened into the ground and filled with earth. The following tiers are created in the same way. Make sure that there is enough space for planting flowers, given that they will grow over time.

While covering the topic, it is impossible not to mention the raised flower beds. This element of landscape design came to us from England. Such a bed is broken up in a flower bed, raised at a distance of 15 cm to a meter above the ground.

Raised flower bed

The raised flower beds of a round shape look original; they are a worthy decoration for any corner of the garden and yard. They can be placed both on the ground and on a solid foundation.

A raised flower bed can be fenced off with walls made of different materials – wood, natural stone, brick. It is imperative to make a drainage layer inside the structure. Such flower beds are successfully used to decorate recreation areas, for barbecues, but a single raised flower bed itself will decorate the yard and garden. For such a flower bed, it is better to use annuals – bulbous and perennial plants above the soil level may not withstand the harsh winter and freeze. The material used to create the flower bed can accentuate the style of the garden. For example, a brick is suitable for a country-style garden; a natural stone flower bed looks beautiful in a regular garden.

In addition to the original look, the raised flower bed has other advantages. If the soil on your site is not fertile, you can create any conditions inside the flower bed and plant interesting plants. Plants have more space for growth than in a container, and it is easier to care for them, since you do not need to constantly bend over, as when caring for a regular flower bed.

It is convenient to use wall blocks to create tiered and raised flower beds. It is especially easy with their help to create a rectangular flower bed.

A raised flower bed is a place where decorative cereals will grow well and look spectacular – pampas grass, giant feather grass, comb wheatgrass, etc. Wildflowers will also look good in it if the background is a green lawn. Plants in an elevated flower bed need more watering just like any other elevation. Both the vertical multi-tiered and the raised flower bed in the evening can be highlighted with illumination, the light sources can be located both below and among the plants.
