If taste is important to you, choose large varieties of tomatoes, both for open ground and for greenhouses.

Large tomatoes are especially good fresh and are suitable for all types of processing: salads, pastas, ketchups. Tomato juices are thick due to their high dry matter content. This indicator allows you to use the fruit for drying.

The only thing for which large-fruited tomatoes are not very suitable is canning in its entirety. The fruits of the lower brushes will definitely not fit into the jar, although individual specimens of the upper ones may be in size.Large tomatoes on a branch

How good are these “babies”

The main part of large-fruited varieties, despite the size, is different:

  1. Great taste.
  2. Pretty thin skin.
  3. A small number of seed chambers.
  4. Small seeds.
  5. High yield.

Among the shortcomings can be noted:

  1. The risk of damage to large fruits by diseases, especially in conditions of high humidity with thickening of plantings and insufficient ventilation.
  2. Hypersensitivity to a lack of mineral nutrition during the period of active fruit set can lead to falling ovaries.
  3. A small number of ovaries on one brush.

Features of growing large varieties of tomatoes

Large varieties of tomato, most often, indeterminate or tall determinate plants.
In a greenhouse, it is better to form plants into one stem and get the maximum number of fruit clusters using the height of the greenhouse. After setting a sufficient number of fruits, pinch the top of indeterminate tomatoes so that the ovaries have time to gain weight and ripen.

In open ground, it is better to grow determinant varieties and form a low bush in two stems (less often three) in order to obtain products from the first brushes in a short time, since the growing season is limited.

Recommended for greenhouses

The variety has an average ripening period (110-115 days), the type of bush is indeterminate, the plant can reach a height of 2 m or more. Forms a large amount of green mass. Fruit brushes are not large – 3-4 fruits. But this does not prevent picking up to 30 kg of tomato from a bush, since the weight of one tomato is on average 300-400 g, and some specimens gain weight up to 800 g. At the same time, the peel of the fruit is not hard, the pulp is tender, with sourness. The color is red. The stalk has pronounced ribbing, the fruits themselves are rounded, slightly flattened.Big tomato on the scales

Tall (up to 2 m), indeterminate, mid-season variety. It forms a maximum of 2 stems. High yielding. Brushes consist of 3-5 fruits. Fruits are pinkish-red, ribbed, slightly flat, average weight 300-500 g, up to 700 g on the lower racemes. The fruits are fleshy, with a low moisture content.

The lower brushes give 6-8 egg-shaped fruits weighing about 300 g. They are quite dense, the skin is thin, the flesh is slightly sour. It has good commercial qualities, it is stored up to 45 days.Tomato goose egg

To obtain giant fruits weighing 400-600 g or more, the plant must be formed into one trunk. Productivity from a bush to 10 kg. The fruits are bright red, slightly flattened, fleshy, sweet (dry matter content up to 5%). The variety is mid-season, well stored, resistant to cracking and major diseases. Used for all types of processing and fresh.

Good in open field

Unpretentious, resistant to diseases and adverse growing conditions. The maturation period is average (100-115 days). The type of bush is indeterminate with a powerful formation of shoots and shortened internodes, it requires a garter to a high support. When formed into one stem in greenhouse conditions, it grows up to 3 m, while growth is not limited. Up to 10 uniform, dark red, sweet tomatoes weighing 100 g or more with good taste ripen on one fruit brush. Stores well and ripens after removal. Universal purpose. High-yielding, fruiting until frost.

Early ripe, the first fruits ripen in less than 100 days. In the southern regions it can be grown in a seedless way. The plant is undersized, up to 50 cm, the bush is wide. From a bush, 4 kg of round, dense fruits weighing from 120 to 250 g are obtained. Universal purpose.

Due to the good ratio of mineral elements, it is suitable for dietary nutrition.

This variety of tomato belongs to early ripening crops, and therefore grows well in middle latitudes and gives a full crop in open ground.

Large-fruited indeterminate varieties

It is valued for its high yield and rather earlier ripening (110-120 days). The bush reaches a height of 2 m, well leafy. The number of fruit clusters is not limited and depends on growing conditions. Fruiting continues until frost, one brush gives up to 6 fruits. Tomatoes are raspberry-red in color, with a juicy, sugary pulp texture, a small amount of seeds and seed chambers, weighing from 200-300 g to 600 g. The peel is elastic, thin, does not crack. Delicious fruits of universal purpose.Mazarini tomatoes in a greenhouse

The variety is mid-season, therefore, in the southern regions it gives good yields in open ground, and in the northern regions it showed itself better in artificial shelters. The height of the plant is up to 1,5-1,7 m, it needs constant pinching and garter under each fruiting brush, since 5-6 fruits are tied on each, the weight of which reaches 300 g, and on the lower ones – up to 400 g. Taste qualities – excellent.

It ripens in medium-early terms, suitable for greenhouses and open ground. The bush grows vigorously (up to 2 m). Requires constant pinching. Full brushes contain up to 8 large fruits weighing about 200 g, some of them reach 500-600 g. The color of the berries is dark pink. The pulp is sweet and sour, dense, aromatic, with a small number of seed chambers and seeds. Suitable for processing and fresh salads.

Very famous and popular, unpretentious and easy to grow, has excellent taste and pleasant flesh. By type of bush – determinant, rather tall (up to 1,5 m), suitable for greenhouses and open ground. Productivity in the greenhouse up to 12 kg per 1 m2. Fruit color ranges from off-white to maroon. Damaged by phytophthora.

Large-fruited hybrid varieties of tomato

Created for growing in greenhouses, adapted to the conditions of the Ural region, has a powerful vegetative system of indeterminate type, grown in one stem. Needs enhanced nutrition, constant pinching. Resistant to viral infections. The variety is medium late (116-120 days). Productivity from one bush is 5-8 kg. The fruits are round, slightly compressed, without pronounced ribs, weighing up to 300 g or more. The texture is dense, juicy, slightly sour in taste. It has good commercial qualities. Suitable for universal use.

Indeterminate variety of medium late ripening (115-120 days). Gives good results when grown in all types of greenhouses. It has a fairly high resistance to major tomato diseases. It is recommended to grow in one stem. The first fruit cluster is laid not earlier than 9 leaves, on each of them 5-7 large-sized berries ripen, weighing up to 300 g or more. Provides productivity from a bush to 8 kg. Fruit color is bright red. In shape, they are slightly flattened, the consistency is dense with a small number of seed chambers. The skin is dense, so the tomatoes are well stored and transported. A high percentage of dry matter (up to 6%) allows the use of tomatoes even for drying.Green tied tomatoes

High-yielding variety, created mainly for protected ground. When grown in open ground, it does not have time to fully reveal its potential, although the variety is mid-season. It can be grown in two stems, while you need to stepchild and remove leaves in a timely manner. The green mass is plentiful, fruit clusters usually do not contain many ovaries (3-5), but they are quite large, especially the first ones (180-250 g). From 1m2 collect 15-16 kg of tomato of this variety. The fruits have an interesting shape of a cube squeezed from the sides, smooth and fleshy, contain a small amount of seeds, resistant to cracking, and are well stored. The main color of the fruit is red with a pinkish tint.

With good agricultural technology, they are not affected by diseases.

High-yielding hybrid (F1) of medium early maturity (100-115 days). The plant is tall but compact. Internodes are short, the first flower cluster is above the 7th leaf. The fruits are smooth, dense, red in color, weighing up to 300 g. Despite the fact that there are many seed chambers, the taste is excellent, the presentation is attractive. It has a stable immunity to diseases and adverse weather conditions.

A good harvest is also provided by Cavalcade F1, Resource F1, Russian Troika F1, Major F1.

Siberian selection tomatoes

Belongs to the group of semi-determinant, mid-season varieties. It shows good yields in greenhouses and open ground, while in open ground it is formed into two or three stems. Large fleshy fruits weighing 350-500 g have an excellent sweetish taste and a pleasant fleshy texture. They are heart-shaped in shape, red-crimson in color. A cold-resistant variety, with normal agricultural technology, it is resistant to major diseases.

Similar qualities in varieties: Siberian F1, Pride of Siberia, Velmozha, Sensei.

The largest varieties of tomatoes

Excellent in taste, with tender, juicy, sweet pulp tomatoes, weighing from 300 to 400 g. The first bunches, under favorable conditions, give fruits weighing up to 800 g. The variety is determinant, medium-sized, mid-ripening. Fruit clusters form few fruits, usually 3-4. The bush is formed into two, sometimes three stems, the growth of which is limited. The seeds are not large, there are not many chambers for them. The stalk has abundant ribbing, the peel is thin and elastic. Suitable for greenhouses and open ground. Valued for its good taste, suitable for processing.Tomato varieties Russian hero

Large-fruited varieties have similar characteristics Russian size F1, Raspberry giant, Sugar giant, Pink honey, Required size F1, Shuntuk giant.

How to keep fruits fresh

Large tomatoes are tender and fleshy, you want to keep them fresh as long as possible. It is best to do this in the refrigerator at a temperature of 3°C to 6°C. Without a refrigerator, tomatoes are stored in slatted, well-ventilated boxes. You can wrap them in dark paper.

For processing use a weak solution of potassium permanganate or boric acid. For storage, the fruits are laid only with dry stalks.

A wide variety of large varieties of tomato allows you to grow them in different climatic zones, in shelters and without them. In terms of taste characteristics, they have no equal, so they will always find their consumer. And labor costs with the right agricultural technology will be paid for by a generous harvest.
