Grapes are a fairly popular plant among gardeners, as they are characterized by easy rooting. It is usually grown from cuttings, because they quickly take root. In this article, we will take a closer look at how to properly root grapes, which methods are popular.
Rooting in water
For the process of rooting grapes to be successful, you need to use live cuttings. It should be noted that cuttings are harvested in the fall. They are cut off, wrapped in a plastic bag and placed in the refrigerator for storage. Although you can store them in a room where the air temperature is from 0 to +5 degrees.
The stalk absorbs moisture, which is lost over time, as a result, it may die. It is recommended to test it just before the rooting process. Using a knife, an incision is made in the lower part of the plant, if the wood is bright green, then you can proceed to rooting.
Water for germinating cuttings is ideal. But it is strictly forbidden to use water from the city water supply.
If it is not possible to use purified water, then let it stand for 2-3 days. The ideal solution is melted or filtered water.
The top of the cutting should be cool, while its bottom should always be warm. If at the top the air temperature should vary within + 10-15 degrees, then the bottom should be + 23-27 degrees. In such conditions, the roots will appear before the buds begin to bloom. To maintain the required temperature, you can apply one of the following methods.
- Banks with cuttings should be placed above the battery, but the window should be left ajar. This method is very simple, but it does not allow you to control the top temperature, and it is also not suitable if many cuttings are rooting at once.
- You can also place a jar on a heating film, for example, using the “warm floor” system. The seedlings will receive the required temperature from below, and the top will already be maintained with the help of fresh air entering through the window.
- You can slightly modify the first method, if you place a sheet of metal on the battery, on top of which the jars will be located. This approach will allow you to constantly heat the containers from below.
Usually after 2 weeks, roots begin to appear.
Important! If the roots do not appear, but shoots have already appeared, then they need to be cut very carefully. Growing shoots take away the strength of the plant, so the roots do not have the nutrients to form. The roots should be longer than 1 cm, then during planting they will not break.
Germination in soil
A fairly effective way is rooting grape cuttings in the ground. Initially, it is necessary to prepare containers, the volume of which will be from 0,5 to 1 liter. You can use peat pots, plastic cups and even bottles if you first cut them into two parts. Expanded clay is poured to the bottom of the tank.
The soil should include sand, humus and garden soil in equal proportions. This composition is characterized by airiness. You can take equal proportions of sand and a universal soil mixture purchased at a store. Next, the soil must be well moistened.
The cutting for rooting should have an oblique cut. It is placed in a prepared container and covered with earth for only 1/3 of the part. The handle must be in an upright position, be stable. Next, the landing should be watered.
If there is no sand to add to the soil, then it can be replaced with perlite or vermiculite, as they give the earth airiness and also perfectly retain moisture.
After planting, the cuttings should be placed on the windowsill. Further, it is very important to adhere to the same temperature regime that is used during the rooting of grapes in water. If a leaf appears on the handle, then this signals that the plant has taken root, and you can plant it in a permanent place.
Use of peat tablets
Many gardeners use peat tablets in summer to root grape cuttings. Initially, they should be soaked for 1-2 days in water, then make a special cut and stick the end of the cutting into an already swollen peat tablet. After you need to wrap it with a damp cloth, over a plastic bag and tie it tightly to keep moisture inside.
This option is very popular, since such a design with a handle can be stored even in a closet, in addition, there is no need to comply with the temperature conditions described in the methods above. After 3-4 weeks, germination will occur.
Important! It is worth paying attention that you need to apply paraffin to the top of the cutting.
Over time, it will be possible to observe that small roots make their way through a wet peat tablet. Further, the plant can already be planted in open ground, but you should be quite careful, because you will need to cut the mesh on the tablet without damaging the roots.
The peculiarity of this method is that the roots can already be observed, but there are still no leaves. As a result, the seedlings are not elongated.
other methods
There are quite a few ways to root grapes in spring or summer, for example, in August. It is worth paying attention to the Moldovan version, because many wines and juices from Moldova are in demand all over the world. They even root the cuttings of grapes in a special way.
It is necessary to take a vine, the length of which will be from 55-60 cm. It must be carefully twisted into a ring and tied with a rope for secure fixation. Further, this ring is placed in an earthen hole, but 1-2 buds should remain on the surface. The planted vine should be covered with a mound of earth, then the kidneys will not dry out. It is recommended to do rooting in March, and in the fall the seedling will be quite powerful, and the next season will please with fruits.
This method involves regular top dressing, as you need to provide a long vine with nutrients.
Another popular method is aeration, which is carried out in an aquarium. Prepared cuttings should be placed on the foam bridge, while they should be in the water by about 2-3 cm. An aerator is placed in the aquarium, which pumps air, as a result, the roots germinate quite quickly. The top of the cutting will be cool, and the bottom will be in warm water, and as a result, the root system develops faster.
