How to make a planter for petunias + an overview of the best varieties and nuances of planting and care

From French the word “pots” is translated as “hidden flower”. Over time, clay pots, in which petunias are most often grown, become covered with white spots and lose their attractiveness. Then they are installed in a separate container, which mainly performs a decorative function. What can you make a planter for petunias with your own hands? Of everything that you can find in your household and has ceased to be necessary for you. These can be old garden buckets, wheel rims, worn-out tires or suitcases, chairs, kettles and even all kinds of shoes. There would be desire, free time and irrepressible fantasy.

If the planter is in a warm room, then the most suitable material for it will be wood, plastic or ceramics. For the street, winter garden or unheated veranda, more frost-resistant options are suitable: fireclay clay or faience. If you grow petunia in pots, then pallets are needed to help out during the watering period. Always provide for the possibility of a drain for water.

Wheel rim planter

It doesn’t take a lot of money to create such a wonderful planter. Take your old wheel rim, pieces of ceramic tile, glue, coconut base, primer and get to work

Honestly, it is not at all necessary to use this decorative device, but the aesthetic pleasure obtained with its help will never be superfluous.

You can completely make a decorative pot from beginning to end from almost nothing. And the flowers in it will be good, and without flowers it will become a real decoration of any site. This is our ginger cat-flower bed, the birth of which we will clearly demonstrate to you right now.

Cat pots

This cat is really cute. Everyone would like to get this on their site. And given the fact that he also performs the functions of a pots, he has no price at all

For work, prepare:

  • a large bottle made of thick plastic;
  • cement, gypsum, water and sand;
  • wire and wooden slats;
  • sandpaper;
  • paint and varnish.

The base of the flower garden will be a plastic bottle, but for this it will need to be cut. A cement mortar will be applied to the base. To prevent it from slipping on the slippery plastic, you can wrap it around thickly with wire. The frame should be knocked down from wooden slats, and then the prepared container should be tied to it.

The first stage of work

If, when looking at the first photo, the final result is still difficult to predict, then over time, the cat figurine will become more and more clearly embodied in life. Don’t forget the water holes

We mix the solution at the rate of 1 part of sand to 1 part of cement. The consistency of thick sour cream is required. In no case should gypsum be added to the general solution, because with it the mass will instantly solidify. We put on rubber gloves. We collect a handful of the solution in our hand and add one tablespoon of gypsum to it. We knead the mass in our hands, form a sausage or a ball out of it and attach it to the frame, creating the shape of a figurine. We sculpt the face from balls as if we were working with plasticine. Before placing small parts on the body, lubricate it with water.

You need to polish the surface of the figure’s body with a hand dipped in water. The finished flower garden should not crack. To do this, it should be dried under cellophane for 3-4 days. On the first day of the drying process, it is better to moisten the figurine several times. We sand the surface of the finished cat with sandpaper. You can paint a cat using automotive or water-based paint, enamel. The finished figurine is varnished. Such a garden planter is afraid of severe frosts. If you take care of it and renew it, it can last a very long time.

Second stage of work

It is very important not to overexpose the workpiece in your hands, you need to work quickly. As you can see, the result was not long in coming. To get a clear idea of the end goal, you can make a preliminary sketch

The result exceeded expectations

So our pots are ready. The flowers placed in it will look on the cat’s back at an opportune moment, especially while maintaining the overall color scheme

Recently, the fashion for petunias, which were still loved and appreciated by our grandmothers, has returned. Once again, we admire the lush and colorful clouds in graceful hanging pots, garlands that fall and wrap around the gazebos, as well as bright flowers growing in flower beds and along garden paths. This is a hybrid plant, the varieties of which are usually divided into groups.

Bush hybrid groups

For flower beds, ridges and borders, perennial spray petunia is perfect. Small varieties can be grown in containers. The multiflora flower subgroup is distinguished by a large number of medium-sized inflorescences. In the Grandiflora subgroup, flowers can reach 16 cm in diameter (Triumph variety). The most famous series are Fantasy, Dream, Titan, Polaris, Storm, Hit Parade and the early Ultra variety.

Bush petunia

Bush petunia Sophistica Blackberry amazes with its extraordinary colors. Who would have thought that a flower that we have become accustomed to since childhood could look so beautiful

The formation of the bushes occurs independently. If there is a desire to influence the appearance of the plant, it is enough to cut off its top at the level of the third internode, then the flower will begin to branch out and become more luxuriant.

A group of flowers resistant to weather

The group is called floribunda. This is an average version, which, according to its characteristics, can be placed between Multiflora and Grandiflora. Mass plantings are often decorated with terry floribundas. The most popular are the Celebrity and Sonya series.

Petunias floribunda

Unpretentious but delightful plants that, with proper care, will delight you and those around you throughout the summer with their lush flowering

Picturesque flower thickets

Cascading groups can produce shoots that grow in all directions, forming dense flower bushes. This is a great decoration for gazebos, verandas and terraces. Scourges up to 1,5 meters throw out remarkably beautiful varieties of Typhoon, Rose, Cherry, Ramblin and Silver.

Cascading petunia

A cascading petunia falls on you with a whole flower waterfall. Imagine your gazebo in such a colorful design, and you immediately want to embody what you imagined.

Live flower curtains

Unlike cascading species, ampelous ones emit shoots that are directed only downward. These varieties of petunias are ideal for hanging planters. However, when planted in a flower bed, they form a beautiful flower cover on the ground.

We offer you to watch the video material in detail about the varieties and the best varieties.

So, we have a flower garden, we have decided on the desired varieties. It is time to plant, grow and enjoy the result. You can buy seeds, but for beginners it is better to start with ready-made seedlings. Before growing prepared petunia seedlings in a flowerpot, you should make sure that positive temperatures are established at night and that frosts do not threaten your sprouts.

Ideal courtyards

In order to strictly follow all planting and grooming rules, it is very important to have an incentive. For this, we have placed these photographs of the courtyards of dreams here. Such results can be achieved, if desired, by you.

Simple landing rules

Abundant nutrition is an important part of a healthy plant’s life. Often, to impress the buyer, sellers plant three roots per liter pot. They will inevitably die due to nutritional deficiencies.

  • Shrub and floribunda species need 1-2 liters of soil per root.
  • Cascading and ampelous are more voracious, and their need for land is 3-5 liters per 1 root.
  • Tornado and Typhoon are powerful varieties that need 7-15 liters per root.

When considering how many petunias you will plant in pots, keep in mind: the distance from one central stem to another should be at least 15-20 cm. Otherwise, the plants will simply strangle each other.

Geranium and petunias

Geranium and petunia are often the basis of such flower arrangements. They look great together. The issue of watering can be solved and made less frequent if you use a hydrogel

Choosing the right land

The problem with simple garden soil is that it is too heavy for delicate flowers. It can crack between waterings. If it is not loosened constantly, then the roots will suffocate. Therefore, when you plan to plant petunias in pots, stock up on good soil. The following characteristics correspond to it: high friability, moisture permeability and lightness.

Pay attention to the soil, which is based on peat. A little vermiculite and sand will not damage, but vermiculite and perlite will make it friable. Another option for suitable soil is as follows: garden soil, peat and baking powder in proportions of 3: 3: 0,5. Such land will be sufficiently nutritious, air and moisture permeable.

Dream yard

I wonder what people living in an environment of such beauty think about? They are probably so happy that they are ready to make everyone around them happy. Create the same sea of positive around you

Planters and petunia on the balcony

If you do not have a palace that you would like to decorate, there is always a balcony or just a window sill. A small planter and blooming petunia in it will give joy and celebration

Don’t forget about leaving

In principle, caring for a petunia in a flower pot is not difficult. In addition to nutrition, you need to take care of watering, showering, cutting and protecting plants from diseases. If illness is a topic for another big conversation, then other components of care should be briefly told.

  • Watering. The plant is watered twice a day: morning and evening. If this mode is beyond your power, use a hydrogel or auto-irrigation. When watering in the heat, the roots can simply boil, so this cannot be done. In May and early June, when the evening hours are still cool, the second day’s watering can be excluded.
  • Shower. Spraying the bush allows you not only to deliver moisture to it across the entire surface, but also helps in the fight against spider mites. It is impossible for drops of water to fall on the leaves in the scorching sun. The flower can get burned.
  • A haircut. Withered flowers are removed, then the plant will delight you with new buds, and not engage in seed formation. In the middle of summer and by autumn, the shoots are cut. Then they will always be lush and fresh.

In addition to all of the above, plants also have a need for fertilizers, which must also be satisfied. And we will certainly talk about this, but a little later.
