Hens: Rooster hoarse

It is difficult to imagine a chicken coop without its most important inhabitant – a rooster. Although not all poultry farmers start it in their backyard, especially if they are not going to breed chickens. And yet, most household owners are accustomed to the presence of this vociferous and always important feathered pet in the yard.

But, like all other domestic animals and birds, roosters are susceptible to various diseases. One of them is hoarseness. It becomes noticeable immediately after its appearance, since every day the rooster announces its presence not only to its yard, but to the entire district, with a flooding and loud “ku-ka-re-ku”.

Hoarseness in a rooster can occur for a variety of reasons. The first and most common of these is colds and hypothermia, when keeping birds in a cold house or in a room where there are drafts. To treat a pet, vitamins and antibiotics are needed, as well as a warm chicken coop without drafts. Before buying medicines, it is not superfluous to consult with a veterinarian.

The second, more dangerous and serious reason is infection with an infectious disease. The most common infectious laryngotracheitis, which negatively affects the upper respiratory tract, clogging them with mucus. In this case, breathing is difficult, the bird has a cough, it weakens, loses its appetite, droops and becomes lethargic. Treatment is with antibiotics and aerosols to clear the airways.

In addition to infectious laryngotracheitis, a rooster can “catch” any other infectious disease that is accompanied by hoarseness and coughing.

Another cause of hoarseness is worms, which, clogging the trachea, prevent the bird from breathing. For treatment, drugs for worms should be used.

In any case, at the first sign of hoarseness, it is necessary to contact a veterinarian and consult with him about the cause of its appearance and how to treat a feathered pet.
