Garden cabbage: rules for growing in the garden

These are not the only advantages of a vegetable crop, but there are a huge number of them to start growing this wonderful crop as soon as possible. The cultivation of cabbage has its own characteristics, so you need to know how to properly care for it.

Choosing a grade

Each summer resident chooses a variety before planting. Basically, cone-shaped vegetable crops and varieties with red inflorescences were in great demand. Breeders have created hybrids that are not afraid of diseases affecting the cultures of the cruciferous family.

On the shelves you can find hybrids of Russian selection, which are accustomed to the natural conditions of the country. Also, seeds of Dutch and German selection have shown themselves excellently in the market. Choose a variety that is better resistant to frost.

When choosing seeds of garden cabbage, you need to pay attention to the ripening time of the vegetable. Very early, early varieties have a short shelf life, it is advisable to eat them after harvesting rather than store them. But early cabbage is very sweet and tender. Mid-ripe and late-ripe are distinguished by long-term storage.

You also need to pay attention to the purpose of the vegetable: some varieties, due to their high gastronomic properties, are ideal for use in their natural form, and some are revealed when salting, pickling, pickling.

We prepare the planting material

Regardless of the method of cultivating a vegetable, the method of preparing planting material remains unchanged and consists of several steps:

  • sorting;
  • germination assessment;
  • disinfection;
  • hardening;
  • picking.

Sorting

Some seeds cannot be used for cultivation, so sorting must be done carefully here. The seeds are immersed in slightly salted water for 7 minutes.

All empty seeds float to the surface: they need to be rinsed from salt and dried quickly so that they do not have time to hatch. If the size of cabbage seeds in the package is different, then at the time of sorting, the smaller ones are thrown away.

Germination assessment

In order to understand whether the garden cabbage will give an excellent harvest, it is better to assess the germination rate. This process takes 7 days. You need to take half of the seeds, which will not be used when sowing. Put a cloth on a plate of water, spread the seeds on it. Cover the top with the same cloth. The plate should be left in a room at an air temperature of +21 degrees.

It is important to ensure that the material covering the seeds is always wet. After 4 days, the first shoots are formed, after 7 days all the seeds that should sprout germinate. Already on the 4th day you will understand how much the seeds germinate at the same time, on the 8th day – how many plants will hatch.

You can simplify the process by self-harvesting the seed. The vegetable is produced by seeds, which can be obtained by sowing mother cells in the ground. Fruiting of a vegetable is 2 years. You need to choose a head that weighs well, and a small stump. If the mother liquor does not gain the desired weight, then the seeds will be weak.

In place of each leaf after flowering, pods appear that resemble green beans. They contain seeds. The main thing is that after the culture begins to bloom, pollination occurs. To do this, you need to make sure that bees often appear in the garden. If the culture does not bloom, then artificial pollination can be performed.

disinfection

If you want that the vegetable grown from seeds is not sick, then it is imperative to process the seed with disinfectants. There are several productive methods that can be used to cleanse seeds.

Most often, potassium permanganate is used, in which the seed is placed for 45 minutes. After that, the seeds must be rinsed. Potassium permanganate is ideal against all diseases and fungal infections.

Hardening

To keep the cabbage healthy, you must always harden the seed. To do this, the material is immersed in a bowl of water and sent to a room with an air temperature of +2 degrees for a day. Can be refrigerated.

Cultivation of seedlings

Cabbage is a flower that is afraid of low temperatures, so it is very rarely planted in open areas. If you have assessed the germination capacity, then there is no need to do seed germination.

Cabbage seedlings are cultivated in containers. There are containers that are shaped like combined cups, but there are just rectangular containers.

In the first version, each seed is planted in a separate container. When planting seeds in rectangular containers, a distance between future plants of 3 cm must be observed. The distance between rows is 7-8 mm. The containers are covered with foil and placed in a warm, lighted place.

If the seeds were sown in a single container, then after 7 days they need to be transplanted into containers, where for each plant there is a separate cell of 30 by 30 mm. After 20 days, they are transplanted into larger cups. So they are before the pick.

Early varieties of cabbage need additional feeding. The first is performed 2 weeks after the formation of shoots. At this stage, ammonia nitrate, superphosphate and potassium fertilizer are used. The second feeding occurs 15 days after the first.

The same substances are used here, only in double size. The last feeding takes place two days before sowing. For planting seeds and transplanting seedlings, a special soil is used, which can be bought in special stores.

How to protect cabbage from diseases?

The main thing is that insects do not start in the vegetable, which instantly absorb the leaves. To protect the culture from parasites that settle on cabbage inflorescences, wood ash is used. Tobacco dust is sometimes added.

The first cabbage in the garden is cultivated without the use of fungicides, insecticides and herbicides: the fruit absorbs toxins, therefore, folk recipes that can be prepared by hand are used for prevention. It can be an infusion of onion skins, tomato greens. Before preparing any infusions, it is important to give them time to breathe.

Kale

The risk of parasite attack is reduced if fragrant flowers and spices are planted next to the cabbage. If a certain disease suddenly arises, then a drug created for therapy is used. Complex funds do not bring the desired effect.

According to new technologies, it is possible to grow vegetables of any kind using hydroponics. Such a covering method costs a lot of money, but the cost of the heads will justify the costs. With this method, you do not need to cultivate seedlings.

Useful qualities

Our ancestors knew about the valuable qualities of cabbage, using it for the treatment of many diseases. Today, cabbage extract or inflorescence gruel, which contains iron, fiber, calcium, iodine, is used in folk medicine for the treatment of gout, bronchitis, and kidney disease.

Also, the therapeutic qualities of the vegetable eliminate migraines. If you have a headache, simply place the cabbage leaf on your temples. The therapeutic effect is due to the fact that the head hurts usually at high or low pressure, and potassium, which is present in cabbage inflorescences, stabilizes blood pressure. Also, natural cabbage leaves are actively used to treat bruises.
