Fireweed narrow-leaved benefits and harms

Narrow-leaved fireweed

Narrow-leaved fireweed (lat. Chamenerium angustifoliam) is a perennial herb of the fireweed family, which is one of the most persistent and tenacious in nature. He is the first to populate forests after fires; its seeds are the only thing that can germinate in heated, burnt soil. This unpretentious plant blooming with beautiful purple-red flowers is found in the forests of the Central Black Earth Region, in Siberia and the Far East. We know Fireweed most of all under the name Ivan-tea.

Composition and useful properties

The chemical composition of fireweed is not fully understood today, but it can be unequivocally stated that the leaves contain a large amount of vitamin C, sugar and pectin. A particularly valuable substance is the mucus contained in the leaves. Due to this, fireweed has a very valuable enveloping effect. There is less mucus in the stems than in the leaves, but they contain another valuable substance – tannin.

This medicinal plant is widely used in traditional and folk medicine. Fireweed-based preparations have mild tranquilizing properties, similar to the action of valerian root. Fireweed has anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial effects. Due to the enveloping effect, it is widely used for the treatment of the gastrointestinal tract, peptic ulcer and diseases of the duodenum.

The use of fireweed

Various decoctions, infusions and teas from dried leaves are taken for constipation, migraines, colitis. Powder from dry crushed leaves is sprinkled with wounds and trophic ulcers. Fresh fireweed herb is used for epilepsy and delirium tremens. Hot compresses from the herb of fireweed steamed with boiling water are used topically for inflammatory processes of the skin.

Also, fireweed is widely used in cooking. Absolutely all parts of a useful plant are used as a seasoning for food. In the Caucasus, for example, flour is made from the rhizomes of fireweed and bread is baked; and in Siberia they are boiled like asparagus, or eaten raw. Healthy tea is traditionally prepared from dried leaves.
