English rose varieties with strong resistance to powdery mildew and black spot

English, or Austin roses as they are also called, have many varieties that grow in lush, spreading bushes. They are distinguished by their special beauty, unforgettable aroma, unpretentiousness, resistance to weather phenomena and diseases.

Abraham Darby

One of the best varieties that breeder David Austin has created. He crossed the climbing variety Aloha, which features a mixture of apricot, pink and red shades with a yellow polyanthus rose.

Thanks to the powerful bush, this “queen of flowers” will be a wonderful decoration for the central part of the flower bed. Large, up to 16 cm in diameter, double cupped flowers appear not only one at a time, but also in brushes, several pieces each. In the center, the flower bowl has an apricot color, closer to the edges of the petals – a deep pink. The variety is characterized by an average level of resistance to disease and frost.

Benjamin Britten

Another pride of the English breeder David Austin, who took the Charles Austin variety as a basis for crossing.

Benjamin Britten has a rich deep color. Lush bloom continues throughout the season. The flowers are large, arranged in whole clusters; the smell is bright, intense, with wine-fruity notes. At the beginning of flowering, the rose has a brick-red color, which gradually turns into an orange-crimson. The plant reaches two meters in height, the width of the bush is about half a meter.

The variety is resistant not only to frost, but also to various diseases and parasites.

Golden Celebration

The name of the variety is translated as “golden holiday”. This is exactly what this huge plant, striking in its beauty, is. When creating a hybrid, two of the most popular varieties were used – Charles Austin and Abraham Darby.

The rose bush reaches a height of one and a half to two meters, in width – up to a meter. During flowering, large weighty brushes with large double flowers are formed. The buds are bright yellow with peach and pink blotches. Flowering begins in early summer and continues throughout the season.

The plant is unpretentious, does not require excessive watering, is frost-resistant, has immunity to most diseases characteristic of the species.

William Shakespeare 2000

The variety, named after the famous poet William Shakespeare, has a massive oval-shaped bush that reaches one meter in width and over one and a half meters in length. William Shakespeare blooms profusely throughout the season. Large double flowers are arranged in clusters and have a delicate and warm aroma characteristic of roses. Inflorescences of a rich crimson color acquire a purple hue over time.

The variety is resistant to frost, typical pests, and powdery mildew and black spot can only appear in wet weather.

The climbing rose, bred by botanist Graham Thomas, usually grows over 6 meters high and about 3 meters wide. Huge cupped flowers are collected in a brush, very similar to peonies in shape and color. They emit a strong aroma of myrrh with an admixture of floral and fruity notes.

The variety requires shelter for the winter, as it does not differ in frost resistance. The plant is resistant to diseases, but needs timely prevention.
