Astilba is a perennial plant that is one of the most popular decorative elements in landscape design. It has flowers in all shades of white, beige, purple and pink. From some varieties of astilba, you can make a hedge that will delight you with its beauty and unpretentious care.
White gloria
An incomparable, airy and very beautiful plant. It has snow-white inflorescences, which eventually acquire a pale pink hue. During flowering, it becomes like clouds of fluffy cotton candy with a delicate aroma. Has rich expressive foliage.
Astilba White Gloria reaches a height of up to 80 cm, a bush can grow more than 50 cm wide.
In the spring, young leaves are light green, with the onset of summer they become darker and shine, which adds decorativeness to the plant. This variety of astilba is quite sprawling. The root system is highly branched, but at the same time resistant to damage.
White Gloria is cold resistant. Mature plants tolerate temperatures down to -37 degrees. But young and old shoots can die in severe frosts. The flower is well suited for growing in all regions of Russia, except for the northern ones.
Amethyst
Astilba variety with fluffy panicles-inflorescences of lilac color. It grows up to one meter in length. Leaves are dark green with serrated edges.
Blooms profusely for thirty days, starting in late June. Emits a light honey aroma. This variety is also frost-resistant, so it does not need to be covered for the winter.
The plant is perfectly preserved under the snow cover. Lives in one place for up to 10-15 years. Loves shade and moisture. Grows well and does not require pruning.
Amethyst has a shallow root system. The upper part of the roots can become bare over time and become like a hummock. To prevent this from happening, it is recommended to transplant the culture at least once every five years.
Europe
Pastel, soft pink fluffy inflorescences originally from Japan. Not very high, the maximum length of the plant is 50 cm. The dense panicles of the plant are completely odorless. Flowering lasts 20-25 days and occurs at the end of June – July.
The main difference between this variety and others is that it has tripartite leaves with a fern-like color. Feels good in excess of sunlight and is tolerant of stagnant water.
Just like the previous variety, it is frost-resistant and it is better to replant it every 5 years.
Sister Theresa
Grows up to 60 cm. Delicate pink, dense, full, low inflorescences. Inflorescences are very lush, diamond-shaped, no more than 20 cm in length. Leaves in early spring are bronze-green, dark, but gradually become lighter.
The rhizome of this variety is vertical and new processes grow only in the upper part. The plant is spreading, in one season it grows approximately twice.
Sister Teresa is not as tolerant of frost as the previous varieties; for her comfortable wintering, the temperature should not fall below 29 degrees. But also not suitable for cultivation in the southern regions, which are characterized by frost-free winters. Astilba will begin to bloom badly and weaken every year.
Bumalda
A charming plant that will happily settle in the darkened areas of the garden. Shimmering with light pink and white shades, the inflorescences seem even more voluminous.
Blooms from July to August. Grows up to 60 cm. Powerful rhizome with cord-like roots. Recovers quickly from damage. Bumalda is very fond of moisture and does not tolerate drought at all.
Calmly tolerates frosts, but in order for the young bushes to get stronger, it is better not to let them bloom in the very first year after planting.
Cut the buds as soon as they begin to bloom. Young growth, like old plants, is best insulated for the winter.
Anita pfaifer
The owner of flowers of a rich, bright salmon color. At the end of flowering, they turn pale pink. Blooms for about thirty days, starting in late July. The bush itself reaches a height of 40 cm, and together with the inflorescences – up to 70 cm.
The leaves are brown-green in spring and dark green in summer. Does not like direct sunlight. But a thick shade will not work either, otherwise Anita will bloom very weakly.
Has a subtle but pleasant aroma. Not demanding, in one place can live up to 15 years.
Crispa Perkeo
The smallest and most compact species from the list, 15-20 cm high. Miniature and original. Small fluffy, pale pink inflorescences. The leaves are openwork and hard, with a bronze tint in spring.
Does not tolerate long droughts, readily grows in moist soil. Perkeo has a high resistance to frost.
Any of the listed types of astilba looks wonderful as a single independent plant, and together with other plantings. They go well with any shrub. On the same perennial flower bed, you can plant lilies, crocuses, phloxes, garden carnations, incense, narcissus, cinquefoil, conifers next to it.
