Frost resistance

Ornamental grapes do not have bright colors, its main value is a large number of green and red leaves covering the surface. Moreover, the berries of this plant are unsuitable for food and perform the same decorative function as the foliage. The homeland of such grapes are the countries of East Asia and North America.

Blooming buds do not need pollination, they are fruitful in themselves, for which the grapes are called Maiden.

Although the frost resistance of any decorative vines is quite high, but, for example, special varieties have been bred for cultivation in Siberia. In total, there are three main types of wild grapes.

The first type of Maiden’s grapes is three-pointed. Its leaves consist of three lobes, and it is best suited for planting in the mild climate of Primorsky Krai.

Do I need to hide and how to do it?

Unlike fruitful varieties, girlish grapes will not bring much trouble to the owner. It does not require special fertilizers, it is easy to care for it.. Even if you just forget about such a bush on the street, it hibernates on its own in the absence of critically low temperatures. And if young shoots still require shelter for wintering, then an adult plant copes well with the cold on its own.

The situation is slightly more complicated with potted plants that are grown on the porch or on the balcony. It is best, of course, to remove the plant for the winter in the apartment. But if this is not possible, and the winter promises to be harsh, then it is enough to tie large tubs on top with some kind of insulating material, and bury small pots in the ground so that the soil does not freeze through.

Young shoots must be removed from the trellis and laid under cover so that the delicate greenery does not freeze to the very roots. It is advisable to do this after the first frost in order to strengthen the vine and provide maximum beautiful greenery in the spring.

For shelter, you can use the following materials.

  • Lands. It is best to dig a small hole in the soil in which to put the vine. The layer of turf laid on top must be at least 20 cm.
  • Snow. In areas with a lot of rainfall, the easiest way to cover the grapes is with regular snow. The vine must be laid on a grate or a wide board and a mound of at least 40 cm should be made.
  • Straw, foliage, sawdust or spruce branches. It’s also easy and cost effective. The grapes are placed on a wooden substrate and covered with a layer of dry straw at least 20 cm high.
  • Artificial materials. It can be slate or roofing material. In this case, you should not use materials that do not allow air to pass through, for example, a film. Such a shelter will simply destroy the plant.

Tips for preparing for the winter

Even if adult vines do not need to be covered for the winter, they still need to be prepared for the cold. The minimum work to be done is as follows.

  • cleaning. Even wild grapes for the winter need to be cleaned of dry and diseased leaves and twigs.
  • Trimming. To make the plant even more lush in summer, it should be cut before wintering.
  • Soil filling. The roots of Maiden Grapes have a tendency to gradually rise above the soil. If in the autumn the roots begin to be seen, then they should be sprinkled with additional soil so that they do not freeze.
  • Shelter young or weak shoots under natural or artificial cover.

Taking good care of it gives great results. And a plant that has grown along the walls of a veranda or gazebo in the summer will perfectly protect from the scorching rays of the sun and will make it possible to retire even in open space.
